Remember that old saying about birds of a feather?
The social-media company TikTok is generally accepted as being a spyware program for the Chinese Communist Party. And the (shocking) front-runner for the New York City mayoral election parrots the far-left line that communists forever have been spraying around ever since Karl Marx published "Das Kapital" in place of ever having done an honest day's work.
So it should come as no surprise that, according to a new study, the app's algorithm seems to be favoring the commie Mamdani.
TikTok is allegedly putting its thumb on the scale to help far-left New York state Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani win the New York City mayoralty, a new report claims.
The Chinese-owned app’s algorithm is “distorting the playing field in New York City’s mayoral race” by “amplifying” pro-Mamdani content while “suppressing” videos backing his opponent, Andrew Cuomo, according to a Tel Aviv-based tech insider who cited a key leaked document from the social media company.
“Early evidence points to algorithmic influence that may be shaping voter perception in the New York elections,” Yehonatan Dodeles wrote in a Medium post published Tuesday.
Who didn't see that coming? Of course, TikTok isn't the only social media app that has been fiddling with its algorithm to favor a political party or candidate (I'm looking at you, Facebook), and they won't be the last. But there's the Chinese angle here, and we should expect the Chinese Communist Party would love to see a kindred spirit leading one of the United States' greatest cities.
TikTok strongly rejected the findings.
“This is nothing more than a deliberate attempt to push a political objective through a bogus study that is not based on any form of reality,” it said in a statement. “The story falls well short of basic journalistic standards.”
Of course, that's exactly what the management of an app that actually was Chinese spyware would say. But Yehonatan Dodeles's researchers have the numbers.
Dodeles and his team focused on a leaked onboarding document that TikTok provides to newly hired software engineers.
The researchers used it to build a computer model to figure out which TikTok videos were getting more attention than they would based on users’ usual engagement levels.
By analyzing millions of videos, they set a “normal” rate for how often posts are typically displayed on users’ feeds, then looked for topics that got extra, unexplained promotion.
Political videos — especially those supporting Mamdani — were shared far more often than expected, while pro-Cuomo videos appeared less often, Dodeles claimed.
Now, in the interest of fairness, we haven't seen Dodeles's numbers or had a chance to look at his methodology. But nothing about this should be surprising.

Here's the thing: In the end, this isn't going to make a heck of a lot of difference. Zohran Mamdani is already holding a comfortable lead in polling, in an election that's only a little over a week away. Barring some miracle, this far-left nut who has never done an honest day's work in his life, a socialist Muslim who comes from Uganda, will be the next Mayor of New York City. Maybe he'll screw it up so badly that the city will never touch another socialist again. Maybe he'll transform the Big Apple into a remake of "Escape From New York."
But he's probably going to win, whether TikTok diddles with the algorithm or not.
