America's education systems, both K-12 and collegiate, have been crumbling for some time now. The university systems are overrun by woke horse squeeze, offering a plethora of "Ethnic Underwater Dog-Polishing Studies" degrees, in between encouraging pro-Hamas protests. Our K-12 systems are leftist indoctrination centers, with Pride flags in classrooms and students encouraged to "come out" without their parents being informed.

That's changing, though. At least, it's changing in Republican-controlled states.

Once known for outperforming their red counterparts, blue states are now falling behind in education as Republican-led states surge ahead due to their focus on proven academic models over “equity,” according to a recent City Journal report.

“Whether you call it the ‘Mississippi Miracle‘ or the ‘Southern Surge,’ Republican-led states are rapidly improving student outcomes relative to blue states, thanks to a series of substantive reforms over the past decade,” the report states.

Policy analyst Neetu Arnold, the report’s author, credits their success to implementing evidence-based reading instruction, removing ineffective teaching methods, and enhancing school safety policies. Meanwhile, Democrat-led states have weakened discipline policies, lowered academic expectations, and prioritized ideological initiatives focused on “equity” over academic excellence, she writes.

That reads a lot like "get rid of the woke bull puckey, and your kids may actually learn something." And that approach, which basically is a return to the basics, sure looks like it's working.

Two red states showing major gains in test scores—Louisiana and Mississippi—have embraced proven strategies such as the science of reading, statewide benchmark testing, and firm classroom discipline. Both have recently made headlines for their significant improvements on the National Assessment of Educational Progress.

In Louisiana, fourth graders climbed from last place in national reading rankings in 2019 to 16th place today. It also holds the title of the only state to have recovered from the COVID-19 setback. Mississippi also made significant gains, rising from second-to-last in fourth-grade reading scores in 2013 to 21st in 2022.

They are not the only states taking the lead. In a “Southern Surge,” many red states such as Tennessee, Texas, and Florida are making huge educational gains compared to their blue counterparts.

It seems certain we could do even more.

Many years ago, my father stumbled across an 8th-grade history textbook, published in the 1920s. He found it in a thrift store and bought it for a nickel, and kept it around as a reminder of his own elementary school education in the late '20s and '30s. I remember reading one of the end-of-chapter test questions, an essay question which was along the lines of "In three paragraphs or less, summarize the events leading up to the Whiskey Rebellion, the key people involved, and how it affected federal tax policies and the relationships of the states to the federal government."

Most American adults today couldn't answer that one. But back then, 8th-graders were expected to.

Yes, in our red states, we're doing better at educating our kids. But we can do better still.

The purpose of our educational systems, at all levels, is simply this: To produce young adults with marketable skills. For too long, Democrat-dominated jurisdictions have been ignoring that purpose. Leave it to the Republican-controlled areas to show them the way.
