President Donald Trump showed up on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, in part to rally House Republicans in support of his trademarked "big, beautiful bill," the continuation of his first-term tax rate cuts, and his immigration policy. While speaking with Speaker Johnson at his side, the president described himself as a "cheerleader for the Republican Party and a cheerleader for the United States," and went on to make several specific statements about his expectations and achievements.
For example, Democrats have been lambasting the president and Republicans for what they describe as "cutting Medicaid," to which the president responded forcefully:
President Trump: “Here’s what I want on Medicaid. We’re not touching anything...We don’t want any waste, fraud, or abuse. Very simple—waste, fraud, abuse. Other than that, we’re leaving it.” pic.twitter.com/uUEZxW2qts

The president said:
Here's what I want on Medicaid. We're not touching anything. All I want is one thing. Three words. We don't want any waste, fraud or abuse. Very simple. Waste, fraud, abuse. Other than that we're leaving it. Medicare, we're leaving it. All we're after, and this is for the good of it, is a lot of waste, fraud and abuse. That's all we're doing. We're not touching it. The Democrats are going to destroy it.
The solvency of Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security is very much up for discussion; it's not at all clear if there is enough waste, fraud, and abuse to cut to save those programs in the long term. In the short term, however, cutting waste, fraud, and abuse is nevertheless worth doing. There will, at some point in the future - very likely within the next couple of presidential administrations - some serious decisions to be made about these entitlement programs, unless we can realize a truly amazing explosion in GDP to offset the increasing spending on entitlements.
Of course, increasing American productivity and with it, GDP, is a primary part of President Trump's agenda. Speaking of which, the president also talked up the reshoring of one major part of our industrial base.

The president described at least three new automobile plants:
The president of the United Auto Workers is now my biggest fan. He said, "You did tariffs... You know how many auto plants are being built now in this country because of the tariffs? Three just announced yesterday that they're building. There's a revolution going on. A positive one, in our country, and I love it.
The president has largely wielded tariffs as a negotiating tool, using them as leverage to bring trading partners to the table. Even China is beginning to crack under the tariff pressure. But the onshoring of industry, in every area from semiconductors to automobiles, was another intent, and the president is quick to announce every such new project.

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) was ebullient about the President's address to the Conference.
Speaker Johnson: "It was a great meeting. The party is unified. The House Republican Conference is excited—multiple standing ovations. They love this President. It's historic, and everyone understands the scope and meaning of this." pic.twitter.com/xiUDLoauCf

An optimistic tone, indeed:
President Trump: I think we have unbelievable unity. I think we're going to get everything we want. And, I think we're going to get a great victory, and this man (Speaker Johnson) has done a great job. And, I think this was a tremendous session. You may want to say so.
Speaker Johnson: It was a great meeting. The party is unified. The House Republican Conference is excited. Multiple standing ovations. They love this president, the people back home love what he's doing. It's historic, and everybody understands the scope and the meaning of this. If we do not accomplish this mission, every one of you - all of the American people are going to have the highest tax increase that you have ever had. And among the debt ceiling cliff that's approaching and all the other problems, this is the bill to do it. I think we're about to get this done, Mr. President.
The big, beautiful bill is still making its way through the House of Representatives, but President Trump's visit to the House may have lit a fire or two. We should remember as well that the president just concluded a rather staggeringly successful Middle East tour, in which he obtained commitments from several of the fabulously wealthy Gulf states for major investments in American industry. If the big, beautiful bill gets through Congress to land on the president's desk, that's just stacking another win on the pile.
President Trump and the House and Senate Republicans have a lot of balls in the air at the moment. They seem to be handling this juggling act well enough; it's easy to forget, especially after four years of the Biden administration, that President Trump has only been back in office for four months. But there's a great deal more work to be done.
