Islamic Foot-Washing Stations Are Being Installed at a Major American Airport

Well, this is interesting.

The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation has approved a project that will see Islamic foot-washing stations being installed in bathrooms at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. The project was approved on July 31 and will be privately funded at an expected cost of around $300,000.

"Project consists of adding Ablution stations to existing concourse level restrooms in Terminal D, one Men's ablution station in existing men's restroom and one Women's ablution station in the existing women's restroom," the project details read.
It is privately funded and expected to cost around $300,000, the documents state.

The special "Ablution stations," also called Wudu stations, are part of an Islamic ritual that requires Muslims to wash their hands, face, arms, and feet before ritual prayer.

One of the justifications for installing the foot-washing stations is that travelers performing Wudu were washing their feet in ordinary bathroom sinks, which is disgusting and incredibly unhygienic. Can you imagine walking in on that? Furthermore, the feet-washers apparently were leaving the restrooms covered in water as they strutted out on their shiny, clean feet.

And there's also the wear-and-tear on the counters after untold numbers of people have put their feet up on them.

Officials point to another reason for the change: travelers washing their feet in standard sinks can leave floors wet and slippery and damage restroom counters.
The stations are privately funded and are expected to be complete by the end of the year.
Similar facilities already exist at other major U.S. airports, including Chicago O'Hare.

The stations will be installed in existing concourse-level restrooms in Terminal D, with one in the men’s room and one in the women’s.

Now, this story on its own will raise some eyebrows, but it could just be, as some argue, good management in an airport that sees millions of travelers pass through it every year. And keeping people's feet out of hand washing areas is certainly a good thing for everybody.

However, there's something alarming about this story coming out right on top of one RedState reported on earlier this week about the massive expansion of an Islamic Center that was just approved by the McKinney Town Council. McKinney is located on the northeast outskirts of the DFW area.

Over 150 McKinney residents signed up to address the council before they voted on the expansion.

Republican Rep. Keith Self (TX-03) kicked things off by getting right to the point: "Child marriage, honor killings, don't tell me it can't happen here." The crowd gave him a standing ovation.
An Iranian Christian who had once lived under Sharia law warned, "I'm a Sharia law survivor from Iran, an I'm here to tell you, this is a dangerous ideology you're allowing in their country!"

And, despite the fierce opposition, the McKinney City Council unanimously approved the expansion, which will allow the Islamic center to accommodate as many as 2,000 people.

That doesn't make the DFW foot-washing stations sinister by themselves, of course. But taken together, these two stories are another reminder of just how rapidly the cultural and religious landscape is changing in many major metropolitan areas of the United States.
