President Trump had a rather pointed message for Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) in a Monday morning post on Truth Social: stay in DC and do your dang job.
With the Senate summer recess fast approaching – their "state work period" is slated to begin August 10 and run through September 11 – and the midterms just a few months away, the president would kindly like Thune and his fellow Republicans to get the SAVE America Act on his desk as quickly as possible.
“John Thune should not allow the United States Senate to ‘leave town’ until it passes The Save America Act or, far better still, TERMINATES THE FILIBUSTER, where Republicans can then quickly pass everything they ever dreamed of,” the president wrote in his Monday post.

The president quickly followed up that post with another, warning that if the Democrats win big in the midterms, they will nuke the filibuster and turn the U.S. into a "Third World Nation!"

Trump's warning to Thune comes just days after the president urged his supporters at a Georgia rally to call the majority leader's office and urge him to pass the SAVE America Act, saying, “Everybody call John Thune at the Senate. … And tell them to get this stuff approved.”

John Thune Just Stabbed Mike Johnson—and House Republicans—in the Back
The SAVE America Act landed in the Senate last week after the House passed the SAVE America Act as part of the National Defense Authorization Act. As RedState's Ben Smith reported last week, forward momentum on the president's signature Voter ID legislation stalled once it arrived in the Senate:
The Senate problem remains. Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) said earlier in 2026 that Republicans lacked the votes to defeat a Democratic filibuster of the SAVE America Act. Trump pressed senators to force Democrats into a talking filibuster, but Thune resisted changing Senate procedure without enough Republican support.
Two of Thune's fellow Republicans, Sens. Mike Lee of Utah and Rick Scott of Florida, said this past weekend that they're in favor of the Senate nuking its summer recess in order to get the SAVE America Act passed, although neither of them has forced the issue on the Senate floor.
The ball remains in John Thune's court.
