WATCH: Jim Jordan Brings Flamethrower to Capitol Hill Showdown With Sanctuary City DA Descano

There were some serious fireworks on Capitol Hill Thursday as the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement held a hearing on the sanctuary city policies of Fairfax County, an uber-liberal Virginia suburb of Washington, D.C. The two main witnesses were Steve Descano, the George Soros-backed commonwealth's attorney of Fairfax County, and Stacey Kincaid, sheriff of Fairfax County.

The hearing was called "Fairfax County, Virginia: The Dangerous Consequences of Sanctuary Policies," which reflects the prosecutorial priorities of Descano, which seem to favor illegal aliens and have led to deadly consequences. Witness Cheryl Minter was present to tell the story of her daughter, Stephanie Minter, who was murdered in February while waiting for a bus in the Hybla Valley section of Fairfax, allegedly at the hands of an illegal alien from Sierra Leone – a violent offender with more than 30 arrests who Descano declined to prosecute on multiple occasions.

The hearing went just about as you would have expected it to – Republicans wanted to know why things were going disastrously wrong in Fairfax County and Democrats wanted to, instead, whine about President Trump and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Democrat Rep. Pramila Jayapal (WA-07) used her opening remarks to go on an anti-ICE screed while her colleague, Rep. Jamie Raskin (MD-08) used his time offering hollow condolences to the Minter family.

An early indication that Descano was flummoxed at being called to account for his prosecutorial – or lack thereof – history was his reaction to the statement by his fellow witness, Republican Jason Miyares, the former attorney general of Virginia. Miyares, who was brilliantly seated right next to Descano, took the Fairfax County prosecutor to task for unequally applying the law to illegals as opposed to actual citizens, which caused Descano to break into theatrical head shaking, loud sighs, and dramatic facial expressions.

Sheriff Kincaid seemed angry from the get-go at being called to appear, and was more than happy to let Descano take most of the heat. And there was plenty of heat for him. One particular point the GOP drilled home was Descano's self-described prosecutorial style, which lived on his campaign website for six years, but was mysteriously memory-holed once Congress started taking a hard look at him earlier this year.

Local ABC reporter Nick Minock happened to have a screen shot of the disappearing text, which read: "If two people commit the same crime, but only one’s punishment includes deportation, that’s a perversion of justice and not a reflection of the values of Fairfax County.

This led to a fiery exchange between Descano and GOP House Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. Jim Jordan (OH-04), who wanted to know why Descano tried deleted that part of his website. Descano bumbled his way through a non-answer, eventually say only someone who's "obtuse" would think he meant what he wrote on the site, which reportedly led to audible gasps from his own supporters.

Brutal exchange for Descano here. Jordan pins him down on his website saying for years that he will consider immigration status when making prosecutorial decisions, then suddenly being deleted weeks before the hearing.

Descano says anyone who thought his campaign rhetoric would actually be his policy is "obtuse".

@NickMinock  reports there were gasps from Descant's supporters when he said this.

Miyares did a masterful job of laying out the long trend of Descano and his office going easy on illegal aliens, which RedState has covered here, here, here, here, and here. Concluded Miyares, "This is not incompetence. This is not coincidence. This is policy."

As RedState reported last week, Steve Descano is now under investigation by the Department of Justice to determine "whether the Office of the Fairfax Commonwealth’s Attorney discriminated against United States citizens by offering preferential treatment only to illegal alien criminal defendants."
