Meet Dan Helmer. He's a Virginia Democrat who represents a portion of uber-lefty Fairfax County in the House of Delegates and has introduced a slew of restrictive and overreaching gun control bills, some of which have been signed into law by Gov. Abigail Spanberger. He uses his military service as a political shield while working overtime to strip Virginians of their Second Amendment rights.
He's also spent months – and who knows how much money – running for a congressional seat that never even existed. You see, the infamous "lobster district" was created specifically to hand Helmer a congressional seat, something he's tried – and failed – to obtain two other times. When Democrats can't win by the rules, they change them; we've seen it time and again.
Helmer announced his candidacy for a fantasy congressional district back in February, when Democrats were riding high on their own fumes and their unshakeable certainty that they'd get away with gerrymandering Republicans out of most of their congressional seats in Virginia. Here's his announcement:
I've stood up to America's enemies overseas. I've fought Trump's MAGA agenda at home. I'm announcing my candidacy for VA-07 to take our battle to Washington. I'm proud to have been endorsed by dozens of Democrats - but the most important endorsement is yours. Hope you'll join us pic.twitter.com/Z78u2yL3FM

Helmer lives in the blue tail of the lobster (see map below). The only way this guy could win a House seat was to design a bizarre and grotesquely misshapen district that stretched far beyond liberal Northern Virginia into some of the reddest parts of central Virginia. All of this so gun-grabbing Dan Helmer could finally go to Congress.

This campaign announcement could not make the point better. The proposed VA7 is the lobster district. Almost every county is red except Arlington, Fairfax and a few blips around Henrico. This district will likely be represented by Democrat Dan Helmer - the author of most of the anti-gun bills.
Goochland - a county that went 60% for Trump will be gerrymandered into Arlington - 120 miles away.
The only thing Goochland and Arlington have as a community of interest is that they are in Virginia. This is disgusting.
This is why we should vote no to the redistricting amendment.
Helmer joined the likes of his fellow Democrats Abigail Spanberger, Hakeem Jeffries, and Louise Lucas in becoming the faces of the gerrymander effort that was just obliterated by the Supreme Court of Virginia. They own this disaster.

Oh, did I mention that one of Dan Helmer's biggest supporters is the contemptible Steve Descano? He's the Soros commonwealth's attorney in Fairfax County who's being investigated by the Department of Justice for unfair sentencing practices that favor illegal aliens (of which there are many in Fairfax).
Fairfax VA radical Dan @HelmerVA releases campaign (for now non-existent 🦞 district) with illegal alien loving prosecutor @SteveDescano. Descano praises Dan’s non-cooperation with @ICEgov & says they’re both military who know to keep guns out. Descano washed out of flight school… pic.twitter.com/JF48upIRGB

Which leads us to the New York Times article from Sunday in which – to borrow a phrase from RedState's own Sister Toldjah – the sad trombones were playing for Dan Helmer's ill-fated run for a congressional seat that never existed. It starts off with this banger:
On Thursday night, Dan Helmer received a shipment of boxes with 1,000 yard signs that read: “Dan Helmer for Congress.”
By late Friday morning, Mr. Helmer no longer had a seat to run for.
The unintentionally hilarious article proceeds to mourn the seats Virginia Democrats thought they had in the bag and lamenting the "stroke of the pen" that killed those prospects. There's not a shred of introspection on the illegality and unconstitutionality of what Democrats had done to grab power, just the sad story of campaign signs that will never be used and candidates who were certain their political machine would hand them congressional seats.
This is actually a story of the hubris of the Democrat Party – they wave a banner of "democracy" while happily trampling over the Constitution and rewarding perennial losers like Dan Helmer because they hate Donald Trump the appropriate amount. Virginia is a cautionary tale of what happens when Democrats get unchecked power and their lust for control overrides common sense and legal guardrails.
Luckily, the Supreme Court of Virginia came along and did what Democrats apparently forgot courts can still do: enforce the law. So pour one out tonight, friends, for Dan Helmer’s yard signs – the saddest little souvenirs from a failed power grab and a fantasy congressional seat that never existed in the first place.
