Trump’s Latest Iran Update Includes a Wild Diplomatic What-If

The signs were fairly clear as we headed into the Memorial Day holiday weekend that this would not be a "slow news" respite: President Trump would be staying in Washington, D.C., for the weekend, rather than heading to Mar-a-Lago, or even staying in Bedminster, New Jersey, as was his initial stated plan. Trump even elected not to attend his eldest son, Don Jr.'s, nuptials in the Bahamas, citing his presidential duties as the primary reason.

And right on cue, news came Saturday of a breakthrough in the negotiations with Iran.

President Trump: US, Iran Are on the Cusp of Peace Deal

On Sunday morning, the President provided an update on the status of the negotiations via his Truth Social account

The post reads in full:

One of the worst deals ever made by our Country was the Iran Nuclear Deal, put forth and signed into existence by Barack Hussein Obama and the rank amateurs of the Obama Administration. It was a direct path to Iran developing a Nuclear Weapon. Not so with the transaction currently being negotiated with Iran by the Trump Administration - THE EXACT OPPOSITE, in fact! The negotiations are proceeding in an orderly and constructive manner, and I have informed my representatives not to rush into a deal in that time is on our side. The Blockade will remain in full force and effect until an agreement is reached, certified, and signed. Both sides must take their time and get it right. There can be no mistakes! Our relationship with Iran is becoming a much more professional and productive one. They must understand, however, that they cannot develop or procure a Nuclear Weapon or Bomb. I would like to thank, thus far, all of the countries of the Middle East for their support and cooperation, which will be further enhanced and strengthened by their joining the Nations of the historic Abraham Accords and, who knows, perhaps the Islamic Republic of Iran would like to join, as well! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP

Obviously, this is a fluid situation, and the details have yet to be laid out (or formally agreed to). Note, however, that extraordinarily Trumpian flourish at the end there:

"I would like to thank, thus far, all of the countries of the Middle East for their support and cooperation, which will be further enhanced and strengthened by their joining the Nations of the historic Abraham Accords and, who knows, perhaps the Islamic Republic of Iran would like to join, as well!

No one should be holding their breath on that possibility, of course. Still, it's delicious to contemplate the fits even the suggestion of such must be prompting in some quarters.

This is a developing story.

Editor's Note: For decades, former presidents have been all talk and no action. Now, Donald Trump is eliminating the threat from Iran once and for all.
