If it's like everything else, the new policy surely will be challenged in the courts. In the meantime, at least ICE agents now have more tools at their disposal to combat the agitators and quell the lawless mobs that Democrats keep telling us don't exist.

Because of the size of the blast, questions are bound to be asked, but authorities have not revealed whether they think the detonation was a purposeful act or just sort of some bizarre accident.

Anti-Gunners Have Lost the Debate Over the Right to Carry

The gun control lobby lost the legal fight over concealed carry three years ago, but it lost in the court of public opinion long before then.

Trump Just Gave the Finger (Again!) to the Space Establishment

Long story short, Athena was Isaacman's plan for cutting costs at NASA and restoring the agency's "mission-first" culture — and getting us back to the Moon, at a price we can afford and before China does. Needless to say, Athena involved upsetting an awful lot of well-anchored apple carts and taking way some gold-plated iron rice bowls.

WHAT'S ON TAP?

Today on Capitol Hill...

Day 37 of the Schumer Shutdown is here and, so far, there's no real movement on it, though there are murmurs. On Wednesday, the Senate confirmed Eric Chunyee Tung to be United States Circuit Judge for the Ninth Circuit. They also confirmed Caleb Orr to be an Assistant Secretary of State (Economic and Business Affairs). (Interestingly, Sens. John Fetterman (D-PA), Maggie Hassan (D-NH), and Angus King (I-ME) crossed over to vote yay on the latter.)

On Thursday, there are a handful of hearings/meetings set:

  • Senate Armed Services — Hearings to examine the nominations of Michael Payne, of Virginia, to be Director of Cost Assessment and Program Evaluation, Alexander Velez-Green, of Virginia, to be a Deputy Under Secretary, and Timothy Dill, of Ohio, and Maurice Todd, of Florida, both to be an Assistant Secretary, all of the Department of Defense
  • Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions — Hearings to examine reforming financial transparency in higher education
  • Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation — Hearings to examine the nominations of John DeLeeuw, of Texas, Richard Kloster, of West Virginia, and Michelle A. Schultz, of Pennsylvania, each to be a Member of the Surface Transportation Board
  • Senate Judiciary — Business meeting to consider S.1884, to clarify the Holocaust Expropriated Art Recovery Act of 2016, to appropriately limit the application of defenses based on the passage of time and other non-merits defenses to claims under that Act, and the nominations of Robert P. Chamberlin, and James D. Maxwell II, both to be a United States District Judge for the Northern District of Mississippi, Thomas Ferguson III, to be United States Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina, James Kruger, to be United States Attorney for the Southern District of Mississippi, Scott Leary, of Mississippi, to be United States Attorney for the Northern District of Mississippi, Andrew Duva, of Florida, to be an Assistant Attorney General, Department of Justice, William J. Crain, to be United States District Judge for the Eastern District of Louisiana, Alexander C. Van Hook, to be United States District Judge for the Western District of Louisiana, and Ryan Anthony Kriegshauser, of Kansas, to be United States Attorney for the District of Kansas
  • Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations — Hearings to examine assessing Obamacare

Full Court Press...

I wasn't able to listen to the full oral argument on the tariff cases before the Supreme Court on Wednesday, but I did catch roughly the first hour, and I've gotta be honest: I didn't think it went particularly well for the administration. You never know for sure — and the final determination may be a split-the-baby compromise that leaves no one ecstatic — but here's one key takeaway I had:

MORNING MUSING

Elections shouldn't be popularity contests — we shouldn't be choosing our elected representatives based on how they look or how we feel about them. In the ideal world, we'd make rational choices based on their abilities, track record, and stated agendas.

But who am I kidding? We don't live in an ideal world, and many — if not most — folks vote for a "team" or a personality. Platforms and messaging are important, but in the end, the key factor behind most successful candidates is this: energy — or what some might consider charisma.

People gravitate towards energetic, charismatic figures. So, if you want a preview of who, on the Democrat side, is likely to be the "future" of that party, take a gander at who generates the buzz on that side. That means, whether you like it or not, people like AOC and Zohran Mamdani. The Dems, in particular, are long overdue for reinvigoration and an ushering out of the old guard. Who's excited about Chuck Schumer? Steny Hoyer? Nancy Pelosi? Unfortunately, for the rest of us, that means we're going to see them leaning even harder into a more progressive agenda with their far-left mouthpieces leading the way. That's where the energy is.

The good news for Republicans is that we have a decent bench of energetic, charismatic figures, many of them on the younger side. (Donald Trump being the exception on that latter factor, but I think we can all agree that he's unique.) The key, of course, is to harness that energy and charisma and attach it to sound, sane, effective policies.

The bottom line is this: If you want to know where either party is headed, follow the energy.
