Trump at Senate GOP Breakfast Calls Once Again to Nuke the Filibuster and Push His Agenda Through

President Donald Trump spoke with Senate Republicans at their breakfast on Wednesday to discuss the path to propel his agenda forward, how to get the government back open, and the post-mortem from the results of Tuesday's off-year elections. We are in Day 36 of the government shutdown, and Republicans saw less-than-favorable results last night: the Virginia executive and legislative branches have flipped blue, New Jersey remained in the blue column, and New York City and Minneapolis elected communists to run these major municipalities. The midterms are a solid year away, and Trump will not be on the ballot. However, Democrats continue to use him as a convenient foil, and the Republican leadership, as well as the Republican base, need to articulate conservative principles and how they can and do work to make American lives better to deflect from making it all about Trump. The signature "One Big Beautiful Bill" has also not been able to be implemented, and as long as the government is shut down, it never will be. With a little over three years to execute his vision, Trump has signaled the need for big shifts. The biggest: end the filibuster.

"It's time, it's time," Trump said.

After the results of this off-year election and what it could portend in the increase of Democrat candidates like the New York mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, this option may well be looking more attractive to Republicans.

It's time for Republicans to do what they have to do and that's terminate the filibuster, that's the only way you can do it. And if you don't terminate the filibuster, you'll be in bad shape.

Trump also focused on the need to have national Voter ID and ban mail-in voting.

"California is a disaster, many states are a disaster," Trump said. "They don't want voter ID. It's only for one reason, because they cheat."

Trump made the point that the easiest thing for the Democrats to pass is the Continuing Resolution, so that negotiations can be had. But they refuse to do so because they do not wish to negotiate. Trump affirmed that Democrats should be getting more blame for the longest government shutdown in history, but the Democrats are willing to take the country down in order to destroy his administration. "I think these guys are kamikaze, they'll take down the country if they have to."

Trump reminded the Senate GOP that it was exactly one year ago that they together achieved that "Big Beautiful Victory," gaining the presidency, and majorities in the House of Representatives and the Senate. He urged that now what is required is that they use this legislative mandate to push past Democrat obstruction and promote and unleash the agendas that will promote stability and safety, usher in prosperity, and a better future for the American people.

We will see if Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) and the Republican moderates and stalwarts choose to take this message to heart.

Editor’s Note: The Schumer Shutdown is here. Rather than put the American people first, Chuck Schumer and the radical Democrats forced a government shutdown for healthcare for illegals. They own this.
