The benefit of hindsight is not something we always have, but it's nice when we do, because our past experiences help better guide us in the decisions we make regarding current and future events in our lives.
This is also true of elected officials. They, too, have the benefit of hindsight when it comes to things like crafting their arguments on matters up for debate, in ways they feel neutralize arguments their opponents have made on the topic. It's also not hard to predict which issues are going to lead to backlash in the form of protests, something we've seen play out countless times during the immigration sweeps that have happened in blue cities across the country.
These (likely well-funded) anti-ICE "protests" have often led to violence and, in some cases, death as rage-fueled agitators motivated by the incendiary rhetoric spouted by Democrats have sought to square off with federal enforcement agents to prevent them from removing criminal illegal aliens from our streets and deporting them.

We've seen this scenario play out over the last several days in Newark, New Jersey, where purportedly "peaceful protesters" have continuously pressed their luck against ICE at Delaney Hall, where illegal alien detainees are held for processing.
Because NJ is a sanctuary state and Newark is a sanctuary city (both "led" by Democrats), state and local law enforcement have been ordered to stand down while federal agents have tried to hold the line during the sometimes violent clashes. Some Democrat officials in the Garden State have also stopped by for photo op moments, and to virtue signal about their commitment to protecting illegals from the evil Trump administration.
Gov. Mikie Sherrill (D) is one of them, showing up on Memorial Day of all days to join in on the action, to protest the allegedly "inhumane conditions" at the facility, and to demand ICE stand down and give in to the demands of the agitators. Here are some photos from her visit:
I went to Delaney Hall after reports of unsafe and unconstitutional conditions inside, and what I heard from families and advocates was heartbreaking. The people being held there are fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters who deserve to be treated with dignity.
My request to access the facility was denied this morning, raising even more questions about what they are trying to hide from public view. I’ll keep fighting for answers and to hold ICE accountable.

But conditions outside the facility, where demonstrators have deliberately tried to provoke ICE into physical altercations (even threatening agents and their families), are the real issue. Yet Sherrill's sole condemnations have been against ICE. It's this failure of leadership that leads to what we've seen play out over the last couple of weeks, where things have finally gotten out of control enough that Sherrill is calling for a "lowering" of the temperature by announcing a protest zone "established by law enforcement" that will be created so the protesters can do their thing "peacefully":
I will not give ICE the pretext to expand operations in our state. For that reason, New Jersey law enforcement is today establishing a peaceful, protected, protest zone in the area outside Delaney Hall. My Administration will be working together with community members, faith leaders, advocates, and State Police to help people move there today. Our top priority is public safety – and we need to take this opportunity to lower the temperature now.
What. a. joke.
Former ICE Deputy NYC Field Office Director Scott Mechkowski absolutely went off on this attempt by Sherrill, who had hindsight based on prior unrest stirred up outside Delaney Hall in 2025, to save face, noting the temperature should never have gotten to the point it needed to be lowered:
Sherrill waited nearly a full week while protests at Delaney Hall turned into repeated clashes, chemical agents, arrests, and open confrontations with federal officers then decided to finally rolls out a “peaceful protest zone” and claims public safety is her top priority.
Ma'am that's [not] leadership. That’s damage control after letting the temperature rise on your watch.
You had every opportunity to get ahead of this the moment the demonstrations began. Instead, you showed up for the cameras on Memorial Day, got denied entry, and let days of escalating disorder play out.
Now she’s retroactively designating a managed zone while still signaling resistance to ICE operations.
Real leadership would have meant enforcing order from day one, protecting lawful federal enforcement, and refusing to let activists turn a detention facility into a prolonged spectacle. This late-stage “we’re lowering the temperature now” move just confirms she let it burn too long for political effect.
You don’t get credit for eventually trying to contain a fire you refused to put out when it was small.
Democrats want this. It plays to their extremist base by keeping the fires stoked, portraying the illegals as victims, and the demonstrators - and via extension, Democrats - as the heroes who are putting it all on the line to rescue them. Meanwhile, they conveniently leave out the stories of all the victims of criminal illegals, people who were either assaulted, murdered, or otherwise victimized because Democrats care more about protecting criminal illegals (and winning the Hispanic vote) than actual American citizens.
Editor’s Note: Democrat politicians and their radical supporters will do everything they can to interfere with and threaten ICE agents enforcing our immigration laws.
