The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) scrambled F-16 fighter jets and deployed flares on Sunday to intercept multiple aircraft that had wandered into restricted airspace over Bedminster and East Rutherford, New Jersey.
The incidents coincided with Temporary Flight Restrictions as President Trump attended the FIFA World Cup final at nearby MetLife Stadium.
"More than 10 general aviation aircraft have entered restricted airspace today, three of which required intercepts by NORAD aircraft. During two of the intercepts, NORAD aircraft dispensed flares, which may have been visible to the public," NORAD said in a statement.
"The flares were used to draw the pilots’ attention."
All general aviation aircraft were safely escorted out of the temporary flight restriction zones after the violations.
Pilots were urged to check their Notice to Airmen (NOTAMS) and FAA Temporary Flight Restrictions in a post on X.

President Trump made a memorable arrival at the FIFA World Cup final on Sunday, with Marine One dramatically flying over MetLife Stadium as he and First Lady Melania Trump headed in for the big match.

Following Spain's victory, the President once again took center stage alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino to present the trophy to the victorious team. He also awarded medals to players from both sides, including Argentina’s Lionel Messi.

Late Sunday evening, NORAD posted about their mission following the World Cup final, suggesting that the multiple aircraft violations were just part of the job.
"The matches are over, but our mission never ends," NORAD wrote.
"As World Cup activities draw to a successful close, we thank the civil aviation community across North America. Your cooperation with NOTAMs, TFRs, and airspace restrictions was vital to public safety," the agency added.
"Thank you for helping us keep our skies safe."
While the vast majority of these incidents are honest mistakes by pilots who simply didn’t check the latest restrictions, today’s charged political climate and the conflict in the Middle East highlight just how on-edge security can be. Especially when high-profile figures like the President, not to mention other international figures, come together.
