Michelle Obama Reveals Why She Skipped Trump’s Inauguration – and It’s As Self-Absorbed As You’d Imagine

Michelle Obama finally revealed why she failed to attend President Trump's second inauguration in a recent episode of her failed IMO podcast.

Obama, discussing the matter with actress Taraji P. Henson, said the controversial decision was simply "the choice that was right for me."

She lamented the choice to skip the inauguration was "met with such ridicule and criticism" that the media quickly assumed she and Barack Obama were having marital issues.

While acknowledging the move to attend likely would have been the right thing to do in general, Obama says she had been actively practicing some self-care by making decisions that benefit her.

"It’s like, while I’m here really trying to own my life and intentionally practice making the choice that was right for me - and it took everything in my power to not do the thing that was right, or that was perceived as right, but do the thing that was right for me," she said. "That was a hard thing for me to do."

How hard was it? She had to trick herself into not going by advising her staff to ensure she had nothing to wear.

"I had to basically trick myself out of it, and it started with not having anything to wear," Michelle admits.

Obama pointed out that she is well known for always having the right dress for any occasion in tow, be it for an unexpected funeral or anything that "pops off."

"So I was like, if I’m not going to do this thing, I gotta tell my team, I don’t even want to have a dress ready, right?" she continued. "Because it’s so easy to just say, ‘Let me do the right thing.’”

To review, Obama confesses that:

  • The right thing to do would have been to go.
  • The right thing for her was not to go. And the right thing for her was more important.
  • She blew off a meaningful ceremony for Americans by claiming she had nothing to wear. Just the epitome of petty, right there.

Henson went on to lament that Michelle took the brunt of the criticism for not going because women are "shock absorbers," which is "exhausting" and "not healthy."

Or, and hear me out for a moment, maybe people criticized her for not going because she was the only one of the former living First Ladies not there. And it stood out.

Laura Bush did the right thing. Dr. Jill did as well. Even Hillary Clinton made the effort.

Michelle couldn't be bothered.

Does Henson think Trump wasn't criticized heavily for not attending Biden's inauguration? Was Melania a shock absorber at the time?

It's probably just as well since Obama made a huge deal out of Melania bringing her a thoughtful gift during Trump's first inauguration, complaining that it broke protocol, even though she did the same thing with Bush in 2009.

Interesting that the former First Lady mentioned always being at the ready for any occasion, including funerals. People also noticed that she did not attend the state funeral in Washington for former President Jimmy Carter, less than two weeks before the inauguration.

Did she have to trick herself out of an outfit for that as well?
