Chaos in Cali: Democrat Lunges at Republican Lawmaker Who Said Cesar Chavez Supported Secure Borders

California State Representative Carl DeMaio (R) gave a speech in support of Democrat assemblymembers honoring civil rights and labor activist Cesar Chavez and had a colleague lunge at him for his efforts.

DeMaio posted a video of his comments in response to a resolution commemorating Cesar Chavez Day in the name of "immigrant rights."

Chaos ensued, however, when the Republican lawmaker pointed out that Chavez was an advocate for secure borders and supported the deportation of illegal aliens.

"He was a strong voice for the Latino community and Latino workers in our country," he said, "while also holding concerns and opposing illegal immigration."

"And so, I am so thrilled to see my Democratic colleagues rise in support of a civil rights leader, an advocate for the Latino community, farm workers, and someone who is one of the earliest voices opposing illegal immigration and supporting - supporting - a secure southern border."

At this point, the camera shifts away to a full view of the Assembly dais. But clearly, there is some commotion afoot.

DeMaio posted the video to X and explained that a member of the State Assembly had "lunged" at him in an "angry tirade."

The man in question is Assemblymember Corey Jackson (D), who demands DeMaio "stop being so disrespectful."

"That's very disrespectful to the heroes of our community," an irate Jackson said, as the video also shows separate images of him trying to get at DeMaio.

You can see a response as those inside the chamber look to see what the fuss is about. The presiding officer strikes the gavel and tells Jackson to "please return to your seat."

Another member points out that, "Dude, you're out of order."

Perhaps the best part of that video is the images showing DeMaio smiling broadly while his Democrat colleague loses his mind over having to hear the truth.

For those unaware of their history - Jackson included - yes, Cesar Chavez expressed support for a secure border, particularly in protecting American workers and the labor movement he championed. He sought to improve wages and working conditions for farmworkers who were American citizens and legal immigrants, which was difficult to do when illegals were taking the jobs.

It also became a source of contention when growers would hire illegals to cross the picket line in the battle to negotiate terms that involved striking.

During the 1960s and 1970s, there were instances where Chavez and the UFW reported undocumented workers to the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) for deportation.

History can be complicated when it comes to people celebrated as heroes in the community. We learned that when leftists demanded the removal of statues of people who didn't lead perfect lives in vastly different times.
