Another Day, Another Republican Retirement Announcement

Longtime Southern Californa Republican U.S. Representative Darrell Issa announced he will retire at the end of his term.

Issa’s district is made up of historically Republican San Diego, Riverside, and Orange Counties. Issa also thanked the men and women of Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, which is also in Issa’s district.

I am forever grateful to the people of San Diego, Orange and Riverside counties for their support and affording me the honor of serving them all these years. Most humbling for me — and for anyone who represents this area — has been the special privilege of representing the Marines and Sailors of Camp Pendleton and their families.

Issa first won the 49th district’s seat in the House of Representatives in 2000 and was easily re-elected until 2016. Issa barely defeated Democratic challenger Doug Applegate by only a few thousand votes and the election wasn’t called until two weeks after Election Day.

From 2011 to 2015, Issa served as the chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. His presence on social media gained him a lot of attention through weekly events
