Watch: Even Jon Stewart Puts Mamdani on the Spot Over Unhinged Socialist Positions

The socialists have certainly been feeling their oats lately, believing they are gaining power with wins in primaries in places like New York City and Colorado.

The Democratic Socialists of America's new platform is truly unhinged, with positions meant to upend the very nature of our constitutional republic, including getting rid of the Senate, having non-citizens vote, and defunding the Department of War.

All of that is pretty nuts.

So it was interesting when Jon Stewart put New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on the spot over some of the unhinged positions that the socialists hold on Stewart's podcast, The Weekly Show. Stewart asked about the policies on abolishing prisons and borders, which even he thought were batty. "If someone says we're going to abolish all prisons and borders, like, I do go, 'I don't think that's a good idea." Stewart rightly said "progressives" should want security for neighborhoods that have fewer resources as much as for those neighborhoods that have the resources. He asked Mamdani if there were tenets that socialists were pushing that were too much for him. His primary response throughout? That sickening smile, and deflection.

The smile is a way to put a literal "nice face" on some very ugly ideas. Stewart's mistake here is thinking about what benefits the people, when socialists aim to upend the existing order.

Mamdani immediately dissembled and didn't answer the question, "If you have more than one socialist in a room and there isn't disagreement, then you don't have more than one socialist in a room."

Mamdani said he was "comfortable" with those types of discussions and "disagreement." He doesn't actually say there that he disagrees. Even with a friendly interviewer, he doesn't really give a straight answer there.

The thing is prisons and borders aren't things that are up for "discussion" or disagreement. Nor is upholding our Constitution. Defense of the nation is the most basic obligation of our federal government.

This is like Democrats saying they have a "big tent" - as an excuse to avoid calling out crazy ideas. Then, the more crazy enters, such as "defund the police" and abolish ICE, the more crazy will be proposed.

Just to note what Mamdani has said in the past, here he is from 2020 on prisons: "Frankly, what purpose do they serve?"

I guess he must think there's still a reason for jails now - at least to hold Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whom he thinks should be arrested.
