:Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell (CA-14) is facing a boatload of trouble after allegations of sexual misconduct and sexual assault against him broke this week,
You knew he was in big trouble when a raft of Democrats started announcing he should drop out of the California governor's race, including people like House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (NY-8) and former House Speaker, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (CA-11).
What was missing, however, as we reported, was that while they were telling him to drop out of the race, they weren't telling him to resign his seat. If Swalwell's alleged behavior is "unacceptable" for an elected official, as Jeffries claimed, why not? Funny how that works.
Swalwell has denied the allegations strenuously, including in a video he released on Friday. He also admits to making "mistakes" that are between him and his wife.
Hear it directly from me. These allegations are flat false. And I will fight them. pic.twitter.com/bQSlCquD1U

That sure sounds like he's saying he's staying in the race. Although Swalwell makes a comment at the end about "spending time with his family and friends" and updating people soon, which sounds a bit like he's considering the question.

Then his attorney, Elias Dabaie, appeared on CNN. CNN's Elex Michaelson asked him about the Democrats who had been bailing on Swalwell, and if Swalwell is still running at this point.. Dabaie's response was something else.
Swalwell attorney says that Swalwell intends to continue his campaign for governor.

He suspects “political machinations behind the scenes” in the Democrat party as the reason why so many have pulled their support.
Sounds like Swalwell plans on dragging this thing out. pic.twitter.com/eEfyBaODMm
He confirmed that Swalwell was still running "as of this moment," then said:
“The notion that all these people pulled their support — I suspect that there are political machinations behind the scenes explaining why the Democratic Party has decided to try to consolidate the vote in order to make sure that a Democratic candidate makes it past the primary. So I’m not surprised to see that.”
Ooh, Democrats are not going to like that he said that.
He's referencing that in the California governor's race, the top two vote-getters in the open primary advance to the general election, regardless of party. So, because there are so many Democratic candidates splitting the field, that's led to some concern from Democrats that those two candidates who advance could both be Republicans, blocking out Democrats.
Of course, even if that were true, that wouldn't disprove the allegations against him.
So then it's interesting with that, and as Swalwell is likely considering the question this weekend, that we have the news that my colleague Becca Lower reported on earlier about the Manhattan District Attorney now looking into the sexual assault allegations concerning the incident that allegedly happened in 2024 in New York City.

I suspect that Swalwell will likely drop out by Monday, but we shall see.
