As we reported, ABC "indefinitely preempted" Jimmy Kimmel's show after he made despicable comments implying the accused killer of Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk was MAGA. This was incredible misinformation that could mislead the public. ABC's action followed affiliate Nexstar saying the comments were "offensive" and deciding to preempt the show.
People on the left, like Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), have been melting down and blaming President Donald Trump.
ABC Preempting 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' Indefinitely After Vile Comments About Charlie Kirk’s Murder
But Sinclair, the largest ABC affiliate group, released a statement Wednesday night, detailing how upset they are. This is the reason ABC made the move.
— Sinclair, Inc. (@WeAreSinclair) September 18, 2025
Sinclair said that they would be airing a special in remembrance of Kirk during Jimmy Kimmel's slot on Friday. They're going to air it over the weekend as well, and they're offering it to ABC to air. Well, that's certainly sending a message, right there.
They also want a lot more. They said they would not lift the suspension until talks were held with ABC about professionalism and accountability. They want a direct apology to the Kirk family and a "meaningful personal donation" made to them and to Turning Point USA. They said, regardless of what ABC did, they would not put the show back on until "appropriate steps have been taken to uphold the standards expected of a national broadcast platform."
I could see ABC apologizing. I don't think Kimmel would apologize or make a donation to Turning Point USA. Indeed, one of the reasons we're here is because Kimmel refused to apologize for the comments, according to a report from the Hollywood Reporter.
A source tells The Hollywood Reporter Kimmel was prepared to address the backlash on Wednesday night’s show. He planned to explain what he said and demonstrate how it was taken out of context.
When asked by THR, the source said that Kimmel was not planning on apologizing. He felt that what he said did not require an apology.
I guess now Jimmy Kimmel has found out differently. I don't see Kimmel complying, so I'm thinking the "suspension" is likely to be permanent, at least as far as Sinclair is concerned.

Democrats are trying to blame President Donald Trump, but this is happening because the affiliates like Sinclair and Nexstar aren't going to tolerate stuff like this anymore. They have to deal with their communities. Sinclair wants change, and they're going to hold ABC's feet to the fire to get it, if this statement is any indication. They also want the FCC to do more to deal with such situations and "the control exerted on local broadcasters by the big national networks."
They don't have any obligation to keep Kimmel on the air. He's certainly free to say whatever he wants, but they don't have to air it.
