Democrats likely thought that if they went after former President Donald Trump, it would move Americans away from him. It may have had the opposite effect. It seems to have shown people more than ever the battle we face from people who are politicizing our system to take out their political opponents. Americans are rallying behind Trump.
Trump has received a huge influx of donations — as of Saturday, it was more than $12 million — and as we’ve reported the polls have shown him taking a massive lead over his next closest Republican competitor, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has not formally declared his intention to run. Trump has also released an ad encompassing the effort to get him and showing him walking into the Manhattan courthouse last week.

“The only crime that I have committed is to fearlessly defend our nation from those who seek to destroy it,” Trump exclaims. “And now, these radical left lunatics want to interfere with our elections by using law enforcement.”
On Saturday, Trump went to the UFC 287 and got a big sign of support from the audience in attendance. He was sitting in the front row and got big cheers and a standing ovation when he was announced. People chanted, “U-S-A!”

Then one of the fighters, Jorge Masvidal, praised Trump as the “greatest president in the history of the world,” as the crowd cheered.

Masvidal also praised DeSantis as a great governor and then said it was important to get that “Let’s go, Brandon” guy out of office. He led a rousing chant of “Let’s go, Brandon.”
Can anyone imagine Joe Biden getting anything even close to that kind of reaction? It just isn’t going to happen.
While Trump has gotten a lot of donations in reaction to the indictment because people want to support him, he did something I don’t think I’ve ever seen any politician who’s running for office ever do. He told Americans not to donate to him if they weren’t doing well. This certainly has to be unique.
“If you are doing poorly, as so many of you are, do not send anything,” Trump said. If you are doing well, then feel free to send your contributions, he posted.
Trump has been full of firsts, and that probably is a first.
If the Democrats intended to do Trump in, they certainly appear to have failed in the effort. They may have gotten an indictment, but there’s a long way to conviction, with a lot of problems in the case along the way. As George Washington law professor Jonathan Turley said, the case might well collapse. If it does, Trump may grow even more powerful. In the meantime, they just may have pumped up Trump in the process and, as I noted, even CNN is now concerned this all may be backfiring.
Meanwhile, Biden is tanking like a stone and CNN reports that only one-third of Americans think he even deserves a second term. That’s pretty abysmal.
It’s a long way to 2024, but those are good-looking signs.
