Schumer Swoons Over McConnell's Work on 'Border Security' Bill — 'Have Never Worked So Closely'

As we previously reported, the Senate's so-called "bipartisan," so-called "border security" bill was finally released on Sunday.

Despite protestations to the contrary from Republican Sen. James Lankford (Okla.), one of the bill's architects, the proposed legislation turns out to be just as disastrous as its Republican opponents predicted it would be, including a provision that the "border emergency authority" doesn't even kick in until 5,000 illegal aliens have crossed into the country — daily. For those of you keeping score at home, that's 1.8 million illegals a year before the so-called "automatic deportation" provision activates.

Following the release of the bill, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) beamed with pride as he lauded the work (help) done by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), practically swooning as he praised his bud for what has amounted to pressuring Senate Republicans to support the disastrous bill — without seeing it.

According to Andrew Desiderio of Punchbowl News, Schumer said:

I have never worked more closely with Leader McConnell on any piece of legislation as we did on this.

How sweet.

As I reported on Jan. 24, McConnell reportedly pressured Republican senators to pledge to support the "secret" border bill before it's released to the public for open debate.

I asked, at the time: "Oh, c'mon — would Mitch do that? Hell yeah, he would. How many times has McConnell folded up like a cheap suit to Senate Democrats throughout his pathetic Senate 'leadership' career?"

According to multiple sources, McConnell kept the largely complete bill "secret" until he could lock in at least 20 of the 49 Republican senators — even if he has to make minor changes to do so.

That didn't happen.

So, as I reported on Jan. 25, McConnell reportedly told a group of GOP senators behind closed doors on Wednesday, Jan. 24, that "the politics have changed" — a reference to former President Donald Trump's decisive wins in the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary — referencing Trump's plan to run on the out-of-control border issue.

Here's Trump:

I do not think we should do a Border Deal, at all, unless we get EVERYTHING needed to shut down the INVASION of Millions & Millions of people, many from parts unknown, into our once great, but soon to be great again, Country! Also, I have no doubt that our wonderful Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, will only make a deal that is PERFECT ON THE BORDER. Remember, without Strong Borders and Honest Elections, we don’t have a Country!!!

Here's more on the behind-the-scenes machinations:

The establishment authors of the bill have largely hidden its contents — along with many possible loopholes, exceptions, modifications, and caveats that can turn apparent restrictions into government-funded welcomes. The bill was assembled behind closed doors by a tight circle of establishment advocates — and their business donors. They include Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), who appointed three senators to negotiate a plan with the White House.

The three senators were Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT), Sen. James Lankford (R-OK), and Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ). The White House side was advised by Biden’s pro-migration border chief, Alejandro Mayorkas. Mayorkas is a skilled lawyer who has cut numerous loopholes in the nation’s border laws while arguing that the crush of migrants will be easier to manage if the migrants are let in by legal pathways. He has also argued that Americans have a moral duty to accept migrants and that Americans “need” more migrant labor to fill jobs created by investors.

#ProTip: Any "border security" bill that Biden's serial-lying Homeland Security head Alejandro Mayorkas has a hand in creating should send chills down the spine of every patriotic American in this country.

House Speaker Mike Johnson Ain't Buyin' It

Saying the bill is "even worse than we expected," House Speaker Mike Johnson on Sunday again declared: "If this bill reaches the House, it will be dead on arrival."

I’ve seen enough. This bill is even worse than we expected, and won’t come close to ending the border catastrophe the President has created. As the lead Democrat negotiator proclaimed: Under this legislation, "the border never closes."

If this bill reaches the House, it will be dead on arrival.

Translation: Stick a fork in it, Mitch. Good job, bud.

Any questions, Mitch? No? I have one for you: What the hell were you thinking?

The Bottom Line

So, while it appears certain that the "border security" bill won't survive in the House — and that nothing even close to resembling it will be proposed by House Republicans in response — at least Chuck and Mitch's BFF relationship will live on to fight another day. So sweet.
