Bernie Sanders Equates Israel's War Against Hamas With the Group's Slaughter of Israeli Citizens

While Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders will thankfully never be president, the two-time-losing presidential candidate still enjoys media coverage of the nonsensical bilge he babbles — particularly with respect to controversial issues. In this case, Israel's retaliatory military campaign against Hamas, in Gaza.

Sanders appeared on MSNBC's "All In With Chris Hayes," on Friday night, predictably telling the ever-smug host that the IDF needs to “stop the indiscriminate slaughter of innocent people.”

Irony abounds, Bernie.

Sanders told Hayes:

What we are looking at now is one of the more horrific moments in modern history. It [began] with a Hamas attack in a barbaric way to kill hundreds of men and children. Israel has a right to defend itself. I don’t think anyone disagrees with that.

But what they are doing now in an indiscriminate way, bombing refugee camps, arming ambulances, killing thousands of innocent men and women and children, a violation of international law, is simply not acceptable.

To be fair, Sanders did condemn the Hamas terrorist attack shortly after it happened.

Also to be fair, the Vermont senator's effort to equate Israel's response to the attack was unconscionable, as was his October 11 call for Israel to be charged with war crimes.

And on Friday night, Sanders issued a veiled threat against the Jewish State, suggesting that the Israelis should not "offend American values" if Israel wants U.S. aid to continue.

It has got to stop. You know, the United States provides 2.8 billion dollars every year to Israel. Now, if they say they don’t want the money, fine. But if they could take our money, Biden wants they to give them even more, they’ve got to recognize that they cannot offend American values, what we stand for, what this world stands for. So, in my view, I said this several weeks ago: understand we need to pause right now in the bombing.

Memo to Bernie:

You —and the entire Democrat Party — offend American values, daily. From your support for the continuing Biden Border Crisis to the immoral mutilation of young kids' bodies (under the guise of "gender-affirming care") to male athletes kicking the hell out of female athletes in women's sporting events.

And the list goes on, Bernie, so zip it, please, about your support of American values.

Sanders and Hayes agreed, of course, about the "horrific humanitarian disaster" suffered by Gazan Palestinians as the Israel-Hamas War continues.

We need to deal with the horrific humanitarian disaster that you described. I mean, they have no water, they have no food, they have no fuel. Hospitals have been bombed. It’s a total disaster. We are on the brink of seeing dozens more people die, hundreds of thousands of people were displaced. Where are they going? Many of them are living in overcrowded conditions in the United Nations facilities.

So here's the deal:

Yes, our hearts go out to the families of innocent civilians killed in the war. "Stuff" happens in war. On the other hand, Hamas runs Gaza as a de facto autocratic one-party state. To suggest the terrorist group doesn't enjoy the support of untold numbers of Palestinians would be nonsense.

As the segment ended, Sanders summed up his views of the war, this way:

We are looking at a humanitarian disaster. The United States put a lot of money in [sic] Israel. Obviously, they have a right to defend themselves but Palestinian children, are as important as Israeli children, as important as American children. Stop the indiscriminate slaughter of innocent people.

Where does one begin in response?

The Bottom Line

War is hell. But make no mistake, as Rush Limbaugh described it, the purpose of war is to "kill people and break things."

Unfortunately, as was the case in WW II when millions of German citizens perished in the Allied effort to put an end to Adolf Hitler and his Nazi Party, war is sometimes the only option left.
