As the NFL training camp kicks off for all 32 NFL teams, San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan says the team is ready to move on from quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to Trey Lance.

Garoppolo has played seven seasons in the NFL — three seasons in New England for the Patriots and four seasons in San Francisco for the 49ers. Now, he will likely join a new team as Shanahan and the 49ers look to give Trey Lance an opportunity to showcase his talent.

Five teams have called the 49ers about Garoppolo. But only three of those teams make sense to trade for Jimmy G.

Those five teams are the Atlanta Falcons, Houston Texans, Seattle Seahawks, Miami Dolphins, and Detroit Lions.

The three teams that could trade for Garoppolo are the Seahawks, Falcons, and Lions.

The Seattle Seahawks traded star quarterback Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos for quarterback Drew Lock, tight end Noah Fant, and defensive lineman Shelby Harris. Garoppolo could be an interesting piece for the Seahawks, as the team wants to continue developing wide receiver D.K. Metcalf’s game while keeping wide receiver Tyler Lockett in Seattle. If they roll with Lock, it is unlikely Metcalf and Lockett will perform at a high level. Although Garoppolo will not replace the high-level performance of former Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, his pass accuracy and decision-making will help all receivers on the team. However, if the Seahawks want to trade for Garoppolo, they will need to trade at least one of their quarterbacks — Drew Lock or Geno Smith.

On The Mike Salk Show on Seattle Sports 710 AM, Brock Huard said:

“I don’t think it’s going to change … San Francisco’s view on it, and I don’t see Seattle trading for Jimmy Garoppolo and taking on that contract,” Huard said. “I don’t know if those national guys are taking those two things into account or just looking at it and saying from a pure talent and experience standpoint, and (because) obviously Jimmy’s going to become available and this seems to be the landing spot save for Cleveland … But aside from Seattle, there just are not many other good fits.”

Although Huard mentioned the Cleveland Browns, it seems like the team is content with backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett.

As I have previously reported, Browns starting quarterback Deshaun Watson could be facing a lengthy suspension.

The Atlanta Falcons are another team to watch in the Garoppolo sweepstakes. However, the Falcons signed Marcus Mariota in the offseason and drafted quarterback Desmond Ridder; if neither of them impress the coaching staff during training camp, that could lead to the Falcons trading for Garoppolo. It is a long shot that they trade for him, as they already have their eyes set on next year’s draft, eyeing Bryce Young or C.J. Stroud.

Lastly, the team that makes the most sense is the Detroit Lions. Jason McIntyre said on the podcast, “Straight Fire with Jason McIntyre:

“That’s as weak a quarterback room in the league as you will find,” McIntyre said. “Lions stood pat, did not take a quarterback. Look at the roster, they’ve got 20 wide receivers and they got Jared Goff leading the way.”

“Does Jimmy Garoppolo take us from 3-13-1 to eight or nine wins and oh by the way, the Philadelphia Eagles got in the playoffs with nine wins (in 2021),”

“If I’m the Lions, do I want to experiment with that? The GM has some safety, the coach has some safety. Both are on five-year deals. If you are looking at an NFC team where Garoppolo could land, that makes a lot of sense.”

Last season, Garopplo threw for 3,810 yards, 20 touchdowns, 12 interceptions, and completed 68.3 percent of his passes.
