A new poll shows that Americans, regardless of their political party, have no appetite for the games being played by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) or his party when it comes to threats to shut down the government.
On Tuesday, The New York Times released the results of a survey that asked Americans "Views on whether or not the Democrats should or should not shut down the government if their demands are not met." And the results showed that an overwhelming majority of Americans, by 65 percent, said the Democrats should not do it.

According to the results, 47 percent of Democrats said they should, while 43 percent said they shouldn't.
When it comes to Independents, 32 percent said they should, but another 59 percent said they should avoid doing so.
And of course, when it comes to Republicans, only 5 percent felt it was a good idea, while 92 percent were against the move.
In a press release, the White House pointed to the survey and wrote that, "It comes as Democrats insist on shutting down the government over their $1.5 trillion demand to give taxpayer-funded benefits to illegal aliens, subsidize woke 'public' media, and gut funding for rural hospitals — jeopardizing critical funding for veterans, seniors, law enforcement, women and children in need, and many others."
The White House also brought a host of receipts from articles by the legacy media and left-leaning outlets, which proves that it's the radical left in the Democrat Party that's driving the calls to shut down the government, preventing any kind of efforts to reach a deal coming from President Donald Trump.

Here are a few that stood out:
ABC News (9/29/25): "This time Democrats see some potential political advantages to a shutdown with their base voters spoiling for a fight."
The Hill (9/29/25): "Democratic senators increasingly see shutting down the government to send a message to President Trump as a political necessity, Democratic aides and strategists say. These frustrated Democrats think they need to do something drastic to push back on the Trump administration and buck up their own demoralized voters."
The Washington Post (9/29/25): "Democrats, cowed by criticism from their left flank about the last spending deal they cut with Trump in March, are adamant there will be no agreement…"
AP (9/28/25): "Democrats have suggested they are more willing than ever to allow a shutdown as they face demands from their base voters to fight harder against Trump and the Republican-led Congress."
AP (9/26/25): "This time it is Democrats who are making demands as they face intense pressure from their core supporters to stand up to the Republican president and his policies."
The New York Times (9/26/25): "Democrats are eagerly showing their base that they are willing to fight… Their base is desperate for them to 'do something.'"
Axios (9/25/25): "The stalemate comes after months of Democrats being bombarded with demands in phone calls and at town halls to go all-out in fighting the Trump administration… Another House Democrat acknowledged pressure from the base is 'part of [the] calculation' as the party digs in on their demands."
Roll Call (9/25/25): "…given demands from Democrats' left-leaning base to stand up to Trump no matter the cost."
Politico (9/18/25): "Under tremendous pressure from their base to show that they are willing to fight President Donald Trump, Democrats are flirting with a politically risky shutdown without a firm exit plan or even an idea of what victory might look like."
Axios (9/10/25): "A shutdown fight might be the only action that appeases their deeply unsatisfied party base."
As my RedState colleague Bonchie reported, the radicals in the Democrat Party are walking their leaders into a trap if they get them to shut down the government.
Bonchie explained:
If the clock strikes midnight and there's no continuing resolution, the Trump administration will be able to go nuclear on the bureaucracies, which remain the primary power center for the left.
All I can say is, "Bold strategy, Cotton." Let's see how this works out for them.
