Former President Joe Biden made his first broadcast appearance in the U.S. on Thursday since leaving the White House, and he struggled to explain his cognitive decline before his wife Jill stepped in to try and rescue him.

During Biden and the former first lady’s appearance on "The View," cohost Alyssa Farah Griffin asked Biden for his response to books “deeply sourced” from Democrats that claim in his “final year, there was a dramatic decline” in his cognitive ability.

“They are wrong,” Biden attempted to say in a garbled response. “There’s nothing to sustain that number one. Number two, think of what we left with. We left with a circumstance where we had an insurrection when I started.”

“Not since the Civil War,” he added. “We had a circumstance where we were in a position that we ahh…well, I’ll pandemic, because of the incompetence of the last outfit, end up with over a million people dying.”

“And we’re also in a situation where we found ourselves unable to deal with a lot of just basic issues, which I won’t go into in the interest of time,” Biden continued, admitting what we all already knew. “So, we went to work and we got it done, you know, one of the. Well, I’m….”

Jill jumped in because it was obvious to everyone that her husband was lost and wasn't making any sense.

“Well, listen. One of the things that I think is, the people who wrote those books were not in the White House with us,” the former first lady claimed. “And they didn’t see how hard Joe worked every single day.”

Jill then said her husband would “get up” and “put in a full day,” and then at night, when she was in bed, she claimed he was still “on the phone, reading his briefings, working with the staff.”

While she spoke, Biden didn’t say a word and just sat there, either looking straight forward or with his arms folded across his chest. The hosts on “The View” were also unusually silent.

It was honestly sad to watch for anyone who has an older parent or grandparent who’s struggling with memory loss or their diminishing cognitive abilities.

According to an upcoming book from aides close to Biden, due out in July, those close to him debated having him take a cognitive test before he stepped out of the race, as RedState reported.

Months before President Joseph R. Biden Jr. was forced to abandon his re-election campaign, his top White House aides debated having him undergo a cognitive test to prove his fitness for a second term but ultimately decided against the move, according to a forthcoming book.

The account illustrates the degree to which Mr. Biden’s top aides harbored deep fears about how voters viewed his age and mental acuity. The book, “2024: How Trump Retook the White House and the Democrats Lost America,” by Tyler Pager of The New York Times, Josh Dawsey of The Wall Street Journal and Isaac Arnsdorf of The Washington Post, is set to be released in July.

Even Biden’s biggest fangirls, the cohosts of the ABC daytime talk show, recently admitted that Biden should’ve dropped out of the 2024 race because it was clear he wasn’t up for another four years.

"But I did look at him and think, I think maybe you do need to step aside,” one of the cohosts said on the April 4 show. “And what happened is everyone said ‘you’re disloyal if you say that. Shut up and fall in line. And that’s why people want to be Independents these days.”

"It was the Democratic Party that made that choice, that said, ‘you're betraying him if you call it like you see it,’” she added. “And the point here was, he wasn’t necessarily fit to run for another four years.”
