George Clooney Talks More About Dems' Split With Biden, and Which Democrat He Wants to Run for 2028

In July 2024, actor George Clooney made headlines when he wrote an op-ed for The New York Times calling on Biden to drop out of the race, noting how the president wasn’t mentally fit, which in part helped open the door for the party to replace Biden with former Vice President Kamala Harris. During a recent appearance on CBS News' “60 Minutes,” Clooney defended his Biden op-ed, as RedState previously reported.

“I was raised to tell the truth,” Clooney said, noting how he saw Biden up close at a fundraiser in June 2024 and he “was surprised."

“I feel as if there was a lot of profiles and cowardice in my party through all of that, and I was not proud of that and also I believed I had to tell the truth,” he added.

During his appearance on Wednesday on CNN’s "The Lead" with host Jake Tapper, the 63-year-old actor said there were a few Democrats he likes as possible presidential candidates for 2028, naming people like Democratic Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan. But Clooney threw his support behind Democrat Maryland Governor Wes Moore.

“Who I think is levitating above that is Wes Moore. I think he is the guy that’s handled this tragedy in Baltimore beautifully,” Clooney said, noting the deadly collapse of the Baltimore Francis Scott Key Bridge in March of 2024, along with Moore's active duty service in Afghanistan. He added that the governor is "smart," and "speaks sort of beautifully.”

“The thing is, we say Democrats fall in love and Republicans fall in line — although I think Republicans have fallen in love a little bit. I like him a lot,” Clooney continued. “I think he could be someone we could all join in behind. We have to find somebody—rather soon. It’s our job now to put together a proper team to stand up.”

The actor also opened up about why he called on former President Joe Biden to drop out of the 2024 election.

"It was a civic duty," Clooney told Tapper about the op-ed. “Because I found that people on my side of the street—you know, I’m a Democrat in Kentucky, so I get it. When I saw people on my side of the street not telling the truth, I thought that it was time to go public.”

The Hollywood star admitted “some people” are still mad at him for it, but said he was “okay with that.”

“The idea of freedom of speech, the specific idea of it is, you know you can’t demand freedom of speech and then say, ‘But don’t say bad things about me,’” Clooney said. “That’s the deal, you have to take a stand if you believe in it. Take a stance, stand for it, and then deal with the consequences. That’s the rules."

“I’m okay with criticism for where I stand,” he added. I defend their right to criticize me as much as I defend my right to criticize them.”
