Between the WH Ballroom and Major Events Like the FIFA World Cup, Counter-Drone Tech Is a Big Deal

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump teased the features of the new White House Ballroom currently under construction and highlighted a major piece of the security of the structure. After describing the different forms of Greek and Roman architecture used in the design of the building, Trump said:

This is a porch that looks out over the city. Also it's developed in such a way that we can have military there. But the entire roof is developed for military. They're very high. They're higher than just about anything else. They have a 360-degree vision of Washington, D.C. They have a massive drone capacity. Not only is it drone proof, if a drone hits it, it bounces off, it won't have any impact.

It's also meant as a drone port, so, it protects all of Washington, the roof of the building.

What was once used for surveillance, photographic documentation, or recreational fun is now a crucial part of our national security. Drones and counter-drone technology are a thing. At Sunday's Rededicate 250 prayer gathering, this form of counter-drone and drone technology was put in place, even though a credible threat was not named.

In light of the rise of political violence, law enforcement agencies are coordinating at the highest levels for these events.

Carroll said MPD is "in close coordination" with the Secret Service, the FBI and other federal law enforcement agencies, but there are no specific credible threats toward any of D.C.'s upcoming events.

In the flurry of executive orders that have come from the Trump administration, the "Restoring American Airspace Sovereignty," signed in June 2025, has been critical in the development of a drone and counter-drone technology plan for the nation. The EO read in part

Task Force to Restore American Airspace Sovereignty.  To assist in ensuring control over our national airspace, there is hereby established the Federal Task Force to Restore American Airspace Sovereignty (Task Force).  The Task Force shall be chaired by the Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs (APNSA) or a designee, and include principals, or their designees, from appropriate executive departments and agencies as identified by the APNSA.  The Task Force shall review relevant operational, technical, and regulatory frameworks and develop and propose solutions to UAS threats, as appropriate and consistent with applicable law, and shall make recommendations on the implementation of all actions identified in this order.

Thanks to this task force, operators are being trained and deployed for readiness response for large-scale events, like the FIFA World Cup in Los Angeles.

Steve Haro, President and CEO of WhiteFox Defense Technologies, appeared on Fox News' "The Fox Report" with Jon Scott, to discuss this important development that has changed the game on how we protect our sovereign borders on the ground and in the air.

"WhiteFox started about 10 years ago, and really the agencies of this country really laughed us out of the room, because, of course, it's just a toy or a recreational activity, how could a drone possibly cause a threat? But as we saw with the Ukraine War, not only are drones changing tactics on the battlefield, it's really forcing countries across the world, and we're deployed in 10 countries, so we're seeing common reactions to the new threat at every country we're deployed in, and it's causing us to rethink how we're defending our own countries and borders."

While Haro has sounded the alarm about these threats to past administrations and other world leaders, President Trump was the first to take unified action, using the all-of-government approach to implement a plan to utilize the technology and stay ahead of the curve on combating the threats this technology embodies. The "joint interagency task force" has been laser-focused on the counter-drone threat. Haro said the task force is led by the Department of War, and involves:

"[T]he Department of Homeland Security, FAA, FCC, Dept. of War of course, and FBI, and other federal agencies all work together to drive an integrated approach which I can say is great, because a lot of other countries are still doing things independently, and there's no unified approach in dealing with these drones. But the reality is the vulnerability is quite recognized. This administration has responded, President Trump's executive order did more than launch this task force, it drove us in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) both in 2026, and the new one coming out in 2027, to increase spending to deal with this across the United States, and deploy systems that could defend, as well as in the Big Beautiful Bill (OBBB) there was earmarked some funds to immediately start supporting FIFA World event because they knew that was coming up very quickly."

Like the technology of the White House ballroom, this is advanced-level thinking — using 21st-century technology to confront 21st-century real-world threats. Haro warned, however, that we cannot rest on our laurels.

He concluded:

"The threats are evolving faster than the ability to respond. As a matter of fact, if we don't use Silicon Valley-like rapid response and rapid innovation in development, we're never going to keep up. Cyber security in the future is drone security and we have to continue to evolve."

It's a new form of readiness: The sky is vast and limitless, but drones are low-cost, easy to use, and easily able to cross borders with just a push of a button.
