Trump Offers Blueprint on How Republicans Can Win the Midterms and Future Elections

Much of the legacy media has fixated on one portion of President Donald Trump's Tuesday remarks at the House GOP retreat. Meanwhile, they bypassed a key strategy and the policies Trump outlined for Republicans to succeed in the legislative session and win in the midterms.

Trump said this to the GOP members:

You gotta win the midterms. 'Cause if we don't win the midterms, it's just gonna to be... I mean, they'll find a reason to impeach me. I'll get impeached. We don't impeach them, you know why? Because they're meaner than we are. We should have impeached Joe Biden for a hundred different things.

Here's where many outlets and influencers have cut the clip, no doubt for the goal of driving clicks. Not only does this lose the full context of his remarks, but it misses the point of why Trump was addressing the House GOP at the beginning of the legislative session. So, opinion journalists launched off on their own take about what this portends for the rest of Trump's presidency, while news journalists rehashed facts and figures on the last two impeachment attempts by Democrats against Trump 45 and 47.

This Republican retreat was about setting policy and outlining strategy, and that is exactly what Trump did. The entire speech was chock full of it, but certain strategies and two policies stood out above the rest.

Trump continued the above thusly:

They are mean and smart: but fortunately for you, they have horrible policy. They can be smart as can be, but when they want open borders, when they want, as I said, men in women's sports, when they want "transgender for everyone!" Bring your kids in, we're going to change the sex of your child. Just send them our way. [...]

We have great, common-sense policy. They have horrendous policy. What they do, is they stick together. They never have a no vote.

Trump wasn't whining that he is afraid of impeachment — he was spitting facts: if Democrats win, impeachment is inevitable; so, don't let them win and show them this is how you do it. Trump made clear to Republicans that they must hammer home their common-sense, America-forward policies and contrast those against the truly terrible schemes of the Democrats.

That should not be hard, and Republicans have had this clear strategy handed to them on a silver platter. In terms of policy focus, Trump spent a good deal of time on health care and how Republicans should take ownership of it and win on the issue.

Trump said, "You can own health care. Figure it out. [...]If you explain it: the money goes directly to the people, that's going to be your issue."

Trump further explained that if Republicans can move healthcare past the concept of Democrat plans and Republican plans to simply create plans that are "doing the right thing for the country," then they will win the argument and the day.

Trump's second policy point was nationwide Voter ID. He used California as an example of rampant voter corruption and how the only explanation for not wanting Voter ID is that Democrats want the cheating and corruption to be the feature. Trump declared, "Our elections are crooked as hell, and you can win, not only win elections over that, and not only win future elections, but you'll win every debate because the public is really angry about it."

Two policy points and a clear strategy are all that it would take to bring Republican dominance and electoral victory within reach. Over this first year of his presidency, Trump has given a roadmap that reflects a rejection of conventional wisdom and an embrace of what is possible, rather than what is inevitable. If Republicans (and the American people) latch on to this, the script can indeed be flipped for the midterms and future elections.
