November is National Adoption Month, and Friday (and Saturday in some states) is National Adoption Day. In a November 2023 Feel-Good Friday, I explained the origin of the month. Its intent is not only to bring awareness of children and older youth who are in the foster care system, but to advocate and work to see these youth adopted into forever families. The month also spotlights organizations that partner children with families, supply resources for these adoptive families, as well as assist fosters who have aged out of the system into a better quality of life

According to 2024 foster care statistics, nearly 330,000 youth were in the foster care system in the United States, with approximately a third of these children and teens eligible for adoption. Each year, 18,000 to 20,000 children “age out” of the foster care system, and thus face a high risk of homelessness and lack of employment. Another shocking statistic is that one-fifth of the U.S. prison population has been in foster care.

This week's Feel-Good Friday celebrates the Selfless Love Foundation, along with the foster children and youth who were embraced in adoption ceremonies across the country.

Founded in 2015, the Selfless Love Foundation focuses its resources on the plight of foster youth. The organization seeks to improve the child welfare system and ensures youth who are aging out of the system can move into safe housing. This gives them a firmer foundation, so they can launch into their future. Selfless Love Foundation also works to create connections between foster youth and adoptive families.

Join us this #NationalAdoptionMonth as we work to make the dream of a forever family a reality for children in foster care.

On Friday, Fox News' America's Newsroom featured a segment on the Selfless Love Foundation with its founder and CEO Ashley Brown, with co-host Dana Perino sharing some sober statistics, which show that that fewer children are being adopted from foster care environments. Brown then introduced a family whose lives were changed thanks to Brown's vision and work.

But the joy of the National Adoption Day is, well, the adoptions. Family courts take the entire day to do nothing but adoptions. This family court in Massachusetts did over 100 adoptions on Friday.

And this adoption in St. Albans, VT, was made extra special when the adoptive mom tattooed her new daughter's name on her arm, alongside those of her other children.

J-dyn, pronounced "Jayden," first came into Bobbiejo's life as a niece who spent summers with the family. When J-dyn later needed a foster home, Bobbiejo relished the thought of becoming her new mom and applied for a kinship foster placement.

J-dyn always wanted to be adopted, and after a two-year process, the final adoption hearing was scheduled in St. Albans, Vermont.

Bobbiejo had already viewed J-dyn as her own and decided to mark the occasion by adding J-dyn's name to the family tree tattoo on her arm alongside the names of her other children.

It's as touching as you imagine.
