Obama's Advice to Biden Won't Work, but It's the Best Strategy Democrats Have for Winning in 2024

In a predictable move that reeks of political desperation, former President Barack Obama is trying his hardest to make sure President Joe Biden wins another term in the White House.

Unfortunately, Obama’s former vice president isn’t making it easy.

Nevertheless, Obama has been advising Biden on how he could defeat former President Donald Trump in November. His advice: Make the 2024 race a referendum on Trump.

Obama’s recommendation is understandable given the circumstances. But it is not likely to have much of an impact on Biden’s chances of winning.

Obama has reportedly met twice with Biden to counsel him on his campaign, as RedState's Ward Clark reported.

Enter, stage left former President Barack Obama, who has had some private meetings with President Biden, reportedly to "express his concern" about the 2024 election.

Former President Barack Obama privately met with President Biden on at least two occasions and expressed concern that he could lose the 2024 election, according to a report.

A new report from TIME Magazine claimed that Obama met with Biden last June to deliver a warning about his re-election chances. Obama allegedly advised Biden to become more aggressive and make the upcoming presidential race a referendum on Trump.

During a private lunch, Obama told Biden his campaign was unstable, persuading unhappy voters would be a challenge and defeating Trump would be more difficult than 2020, according to a Democrat briefed on the discussion.

While he believed at the time that Biden had taken his advice to heart, Obama allegedly saw little improvement over the next six months.

Obama’s strategy, however, hinges on a bet risky enough for Las Vegas: That the electorate’s memory of Trump’s presidency will somehow overshadow President Biden’s record in office.

It makes sense, considering the reality that Biden does not have much in the way of accomplishments to brag about. His first term in office has been quite abysmal, and his approval numbers show it. In fact, his rating with independent voters alone is enough reason for Team Biden to be concerned.

But making 2024 a referendum on Trump isn’t a winning strategy, given that he hasn’t been in office in over three years. Biden is the one at the helm at the moment, which means that, regardless of what Obama says, this election will be a referendum on the current president.

Team Biden seems to recognize this. Earlier this month, it was reported that the president’s team plans to make the election about safeguarding democracy from the Orange Man What Is Bad™. It is the only viable strategy Biden has given that he does not have achievements to present to the American people, as RedState's Streiff explains:

Instead, the 2024 Biden campaign will campaign on saving democracy from Donald Trump.

[Biden advisor Mike] Donilon’s mild demeanor can be misleading. Like Biden, he has firm beliefs—about politics, the public, the press—and a contrarian side. In 2020, he and his campaign team had to decide whether to emphasize the economy or the more abstract idea that Trump imperilled the essence of America. “We bet on the latter,” Donilon said, even though “our own pollsters told us that talking about ‘the soul of the nation’ was nutty.” That experience fortified his belief that this year’s campaign should center on what he calls “the freedom agenda.” By November, he predicted, “the focus will become overwhelming on democracy. I think the biggest images in people’s minds are going to be of January 6th.”

...The freedom campaign, Donilon said, is a story in three acts: “The first act was 2020. Trump represented a threat, and Biden won. 2022 was a second round. You had these election deniers, and all these folks around the country, and they were beaten back.” He added, “Round three is 2024. The thing is, you got to win all the rounds.”

Will Obama’s recommendation work? Probably not. No amount of shouting “Orange Man Bad” will distract people from record-high inflation, a worsening border crisis, a subpar education system, and heightened crime rates across the country.

It does not mean victory is a sure thing for Trump. But it does mean that this race won’t be won simply by pointing at the other guy.
