Fun Fact: Israel Based Its Strike That Killed Dozens of Iran's Top Military on a 'Game of Thrones' Scene

"And who are you?" The proud Lord said
"That I must bow so low"
Only a cat of a different coat
That's all the truth I know
In a coat of gold or a coat of red
A lion still has claws
Mine are long and sharp, my lord
As long and sharp as yours

The Israelis send their regards.

Remember when Israel conducted their operation on June 13 that ended with the death of a long list of high-ranking Iranian officials? It was such a fast and efficient strike that it caught the world — not just Iran — off guard.

As it turns out, Israel's inspiration for the strike came from a scene from the once-popular show Game of Thrones, specifically the scene of the jaw-dropping episode featuring "The Red Wedding."

According to the New York Post, Israel even nicknamed the operation "Red Wedding" as a nod to the plan's origins:

The real-life operation on June 13 — part of the start of the 12-day war —  saw more than 200 Israeli Air Force aircraft striking roughly 100 targets, specifically nuclear facilities and missile factories.

Like the “Game of Thrones” scene, it quickly led to a bloodbath, obliterating a swath of high-ranking Iranian officials — including Gen. Hossein Salami, the head of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard; Mohammad Bagheri, chief of the country’s military; and Gholam Ali Rashid, head of Iran’s emergency command.

Israel was able to trick some top commanders of Iran’s air force into gathering for a meeting before they were targeted in one strike, Israeli officials previously revealed.

For those who've never watched the show...

*(MAJOR incoming spoilers)*

"The Red Wedding" takes place in season three where, under the guise of a wedding celebration between the House of Stark and the House of Frey, the House of Frey betrays the Starks at the behest of the House of Lannister, resulting in the brutal massacre of the majority of the Starks and their forces. Many main characters are killed off during this one scene, almost decimating the entirety of the Stark line.

It was a moment that shocked fans around the world and is still talked about as one of the most shocking moments in television history.

And Israel's "Red Wedding" was no different, only this wasn't fiction.

The one regret they have is that they didn't get Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz noted:

“I estimate that if Khamenei had been in our sights, we would have taken him out,” Katz told Israeli TV on Thursday.

“But Khamenei understood this, went underground to very great depths and broke off contacts with the commanders who replaced those commanders who were eliminated, so it wasn’t realistic in the end.”

Khamenei only emerged after President Donald Trump announced a cease-fire between Israel and Iran, claiming he'd gotten victory over Israel.

“The Islamic Republic was victorious and, in retaliation, delivered a hand slap to America’s face,” he said as his top military leaders were still smoldering in a hole somewhere.

Israel is known for carrying out plans that usually have their enemies off guard and right where they want them. For instance, the famous pager bombs that killed and crippled many a Hezbollah terrorist back in September 2024. The plan involved the Mossad intercepting a pager shipment meant for Hezbollah months before, and rigging them with explosives.

One day, Israel remotely triggered the explosives, leaving many a Hezbollah terrorist with missing parts and a deep distrust of electronics.
