Republican Byron Donalds defeated Democrat David Jolly in the Florida governor's race, securing the office and extending nearly three decades of Republican control. The outcome keeps the state on the course set by governors before him, including Ron DeSantis, who left office after two terms.

Donalds brings a record rooted in finance and state legislative work, along with service in the U.S. House since 2021. His win reflects voter preference for policies that prioritize limited government, affordability, and resistance to overreach from other parts of the country.

“Mr. President, I want you to hear from Florida that we are still red.”

Donalds entered the race early with support from President Donald Trump and positioned himself as committed to that agenda. Before politics, he worked as a credit analyst and portfolio manager. He served in the Florida House starting in 2016, where he focused on issues such as school choice and insurance.

In Congress, he has backed measures aligned with lower taxes, secure borders, and reduced federal involvement in daily life. These positions match the practical conservatism that has defined Florida in recent years.

Florida under DeSantis became known for rejecting widespread COVID restrictions that marked many other states. While some governors imposed extended lockdowns, school closures, and business mandates, Florida kept more of its economy and schools open. That approach drew residents and businesses from places with heavier rules.

People sought an environment where personal decisions on work, education, and health remained closer to the individual and local level rather than distant directives. Donalds has signaled he will maintain that orientation.

"Before I say anything — I want to thank my LORD AND SAVIOR, JESUS CHRIST."

Affordability formed a central theme in the campaign. Donalds called for tax cuts, reforms to insurance regulations aimed at lowering costs for consumers, and greater price transparency from healthcare providers. These steps address real pressures on household budgets. Florida already operates without a state income tax, which sets it apart from high-tax states that have seen outbound migration.

Property tax burdens exist, yet the overall fiscal climate has proven more attractive than alternatives in states with steeper combined taxes and heavier regulation. Continued attention to these costs can sustain the inflow of families and employers looking for relief.

The broader pattern is clear. States that pursued stricter COVID policies and higher taxes often faced population and economic shifts. Florida offered a different model: open businesses, parental rights in education, and resistance to expansive government control. Donalds inherits that foundation and has spoken of keeping the Florida dream intact through practical measures on costs and opportunity.

His background in finance gives him familiarity with the numbers that drive household and business decisions. His legislative record shows consistent support for policies that limit rather than expand state power in areas better left to markets and families.

Critics focused on other angles during the race, but the results turned on governance questions. Voters chose continuity in a state that has grown by offering an alternative to heavier-handed approaches elsewhere.

Donalds faces the task of delivering on insurance reform and tax relief while managing growth. Success will depend on results rather than rhetoric. Lower consumer costs and steady fiscal policy can reinforce Florida's status as a destination for those leaving environments shaped by prolonged restrictions and higher tax loads.

This election keeps Florida leadership in line with the principles that attracted many new residents. Donalds now steps into the role of advancing tax relief, regulatory reform on insurance, and the freedom from overregulation that has defined the state's recent path. The work ahead centers on making those priorities concrete for residents already here and those still considering the move.
