Giorgia Meloni Moves to Appease the European Elites, and She's About to Learn a Hard Lesson

In what has felt like a slow-building inevitability, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni appears to be fully embracing the European elite.

Despite the support she's received from President Donald Trump and the broader Western right-wing, Meloni chose to prohibit the U.S. military from using its Sicilian airbase during Operation Epic Fury. Now, she's moving further with her attempted appeasement of a European left that once called her a fascist and compared her to Adolf Hitler by ending a long-standing security agreement with Israel.

Pro-Islamist outlet Al Jazeera took a victory lap with its reporting earlier on Tuesday.

For context, this does nothing to harm the Israelis. As agreements go, this was very much a one-way street, with Italy importing far, far more under it than was being exported. That's because Israel's military and intelligence capabilities are much more advanced, and if anything, the agreement was simply a giveaway to Italy.

But that's beside the point. Meloni didn't do this because she thought it would have a practical effect on Israel. She did it to throw some red meat to the rabid European left and its Eurotrash leadership, which sees pampering Islamism as a primary duty. With Italian elections set to be held no later than September 2027 (and they could be called sooner), Meloni has felt the heat of an electorate that largely feels their country is headed in the wrong direction. I suppose she thinks she can triangulate here.

The question then becomes what the point is. If Meloni is forced to fall in line with the elites in Brussels to maintain power, then her power becomes worthless. Of course, that assumes her political gambit works. Does anyone really expect the people who called her a nazi to shrug and fall in line just because she makes a few overtures toward them? She's playing a loser's game, abandoning those who supported her when the left was deadset on destroying her. While the EU elites were foaming at the mouth in opposition, Israel backed Meloni publicly during her rise in 2022. The same can be said for the American right.

It's unfortunate because Meloni actually has a decent domestic record. While growth has remained largely stagnant (a feature of almost all EU countries), she has managed to reduce the debt-to-GDP ratio, decrease unemployment, and outperform Germany and France. She's shown that right-wing governance is a better option than the left-wing sludge that permeates most of Western Europe.

Yet, as so often happens, her desire to be part of the club seems to be overtaking the spirit that got her to where she is. It doesn't matter how much she tries to appease them; the European left is going to hate her. They are going to still call her a fascist, and they will still oppose her when it's time to go to the polls. That includes her supposed new friends in Brussels. With that said, it seems like she's going to have to learn that lesson the hard way. You hate to see it.
