Communist Democrats are having a bit of a moment right now, and that's not good news for America.
With what looks like the impending victory of Zohran Mamdani in New York City's mayoral race, confidence is exploding on the far left. With that, any idea that moderation might follow the 2024 election has become nothing but dust in the wind. The Democratic Party is diving headfirst into its own radicalism, politically and culturally.
On Sunday evening, we saw what that looks like, as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders held a massive rally for Mamdani. The former delivered several moments that left conservatives mocking her online. I'm going to take a bit of a detour from my normal jovial self, though, and suggest this is a bit more serious than it first appears.

OCASIO-CORTEZ: Jews escaping Holocaust! Black Americans fleeing slavery and Jim Crow! Latinos seeking (stammers) a better life! Native people standing for themselves! Asian Americans coming together in Queens, in Brooklyn, in the Bronx, in Manhattan, in Staten Island, in this country!
They aren't even hiding the ball at this point. Their strategy is to weaponize various identity groups to usher in third-world socialism and communism. I know that may seem like an exaggeration to some, but rent control, government-owned grocery stores, and setting tax rates based on race, all things Mamdani is promising to do, are not merely variations of American politics. They are distinctly foreign and carry with them immense financial and societal consequences. The amount of division being sown by the far left in their dogged pursuit of power can only be described as dangerous.
And while it's easy to make fun of Ocasio-Cortez, and to be sure, her ranting is comical, there is actually an audience for this. Worse, it's growing. The United States is in a tenuous position right now, and Republicans who believe they've vanquished the left because they won the last election are doing themselves a disservice. What you are seeing from these people isn't mindless flailing, much as it may seem to be. It's a very thought-out strategy to divide and conquer, and this isn't just about fiscal policy for them. It's about a complete cultural transformation, with becoming like Western Europe being the best-case scenario.

When someone has to announce they are "sane," that's typically a good sign they aren't, and to be sure, Ocasio-Cortez is a high-functioning lunatic. But again, while it's funny to listen to her, the role reversal going on is deliberate. Do you think men shouldn't be in women's restrooms? Or that violent criminals shouldn't be dumped back out onto the streets? Or that the government has no business owning grocery stores and dictating rent prices? You are the crazy one. Those espousing 20th-century communism dressed up as feel-good "democratic socialism?" They are the sane ones.
This is the same technique Mamdani tried recently, where he tried to turn 9/11 into a story of bigotry against Muslims. The brazenness is the point. They aren't stopping, and Ocasio-Cortez is absolutely going to run for president in 2028. Will she win? I don't know, but I know we all better start taking the threat seriously because all it takes is a few unexpected circumstances to flip the margins in this country. We saw that with how COVID-19 affected the 2020 election.
I'm starting to worry, not because I think New York City represents all of the United States, but because I can see a path for this cancer to continue to spread. All Republicans, including myself, had better check our hubris at the door. This deranged movement is real and growing, and beating it back is going to require more than just calling them communists, as true a statement as that is.
