With crime in D.C. plummeting following the deployment of the National Guard in the city, Democrats are having to come up with new and creative ways to claim it's the worst development since Adolf Hitler invaded Poland.
One of those is returning to their favorite cosplay. Namely, dressing up as oppressed women from "The Handmaid's Tale," a phenomenon that stretches back over a decade, because left-wingers apparently only know one book and television show.
Journalist Jennifer Bendery of The Huffington Post put up a post on Wednesday claiming that a "D.C. resident" had shared a photo with her of two women dressed up like handmaids standing next to National Guard members in Union Station. This was supposed to illustrate the abject, dystopian nature of the crime crackdown.

A DC resident shared this photo she took at Union Station yesterday. Looks like a scene from the Handmaid's Tale, but no, just another day of Trump's militarization of DC right now. #UnderHisEye pic.twitter.com/lXJaAFmohU

Things are going to get far more hilarious momentarily, but let's start by just considering her post in isolation. Does the picture look like a scene from "The Handmaid's Tale?" I guess so, but that's because people literally dressed up like characters from the show to be photographed. That's how cosplay works. It is not indicative of any actual reality.
In fact, if you zoom in just a bit, you'll see one of the airmen smiling and waving.
Terrifying. https://t.co/BYaIkO3pxc pic.twitter.com/Zg41lvp0XJ

The National Guard and federal agents that have been surged into D.C. are not the Gestapo. They are just normal people doing the largely mundane job of being present as a deterrent. The local police are still the ones making most of the arrests. The Guard members in the city are there because a criminal is less likely to carjack someone if National Guard members are standing on the corner.
Are you ready for the twist, though? Because if you zoom in even further, you'll see something incredible.
That's literally you. You staged a stupid photo for your own shitty article? pic.twitter.com/yOIMHVNuc7

And just in case Bendery deletes her post, here are two screenshots of the thread.

Look, I'm not a facial recognition expert, but that's her. The glasses are identical, the facial features match perfectly, and even the hairline is correct. A "journalist" dressed up as a handmaid to stage a photograph, only to claim it was organically sent to her by a normal resident. Talk about being dedicated to one's narrative.
What's even better is that Bendery has this as her pinned post on X.

You have to love it. This woman pinned a post sharing the definition of gaslighting, clearly as a shot at others, only to get caught in one of the dumbest, most transparent gaslighting episodes in recent political memory. Our mainstream journalistic class remains a complete and total joke.
