Thirty-one-year-old California teacher Cole Allen, the suspect in the attempted assassination of President Trump and/or his Cabinet members at the White House Correspondents’ dinner on Saturday evening, either assumed he wasn’t going to live through the experience or that he would face many years behind bars.
I say this because it would seem he certainly didn’t seem to care about leaving behind plenty of evidence of his deeds, including a manifesto. On Tuesday, meanwhile, authorities released a selfie apparently taken by the deluded psychopath showing him getting geared up for the assault:
Federal prosecutors release a selfie photo of a heavily armed Cole Allen taken inside his hotel room a short time before he attempted to storm the WHCA dinner. Allen is back in court tomorrow for a detention hearing pic.twitter.com/gc0Pw3lv4f

The photo was part of a filing by the Department of Justice with the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. The snapshot purportedly shows Cole prepping for maximum bloodshed:
"At approximately 8:03 p.m., while back inside his hotel room, the defendant used his cellphone to take a photograph of himself in the mirror," the filing states, explaining that Allen "appeared to be wearing a small leather bag consistent in appearance with the ammunition-filled bag later recovered from his person (item 1), a shoulder holster (item 2), a sheathed knife consistent in appearance with one of the knives later recovered from his person (item 3), and pliers and wire cutters consistent in appearance with those later recovered from his person (item 4)."
The filing asserts that Allen was seeking to kill President Donald Trump.
Jeanine Pirro is the United States Attorney for the District of Columbia and will therefore be overseeing the case.

Meanwhile, prosecutors argued for a ruling that would seem obvious: let’s keep this wannabe mass murderer behind bars pending trial. They have to dot the i’s and cross the t’s, though:
"Had the defendant achieved his intended outcome, he would have brought about one of the darkest days in American history. The defendant traveled across the country with the explicit aim to kill the President of the United States," the document declares, describing the effort as "a planned attack of unfathomable malice."
The Justice Department strongly argued that the suspect should not be released pending trial.
"The facts and circumstances in this case compel the conclusion that there is no condition or combination of conditions that would reasonably assure the community’s safety if the defendant were released pending trial," the filing asserts.
It’s hard to argue with that. Assuming that he is kept behind bars for the time being, he may never see freedom again:
DOJ says it has filed 3 federal charges against Cole Tomas Allen:

"Maximum penalty is life in prison."
We have reached a strange place in this country where a highly educated, presumably intelligent young man living in Torrance, an idyllic city near the beach in the South Bay area of Los Angeles County, would dream about murdering numerous people over their political stances. The only life he ended was his own — even if he’s still breathing.
He’s likely to have multiple decades to sit in a tiny room and ponder his actions. I’d feel sorry for him, but he chose his course, and the time has come to pay the piper.
