It wasn’t all that long ago that Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis were (figuratively) at each other’s throats as they vied for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination. Using one of his trademark nicknames, Trump took to calling the governor “DeSanctimonius,” while DeSantis accused his opponent of “running to settle scores” and said, “I would have fired [Dr. Anthony] Fauci.”
After Trump won the primary, however, things cooled down, and DeSantis ended up endorsing Trump for president and has appeared with him numerous times.
Still, you might not have expected two years ago that you’d see the Sunshine State governor signing a bill that would honor Trump by naming an airport after him. That’s exactly what he did Monday, though, when he autographed legislation changing the name of “Palm Beach International Airport” to "Donald J. Trump Palm Beach International Airport."

The name change goes into effect on July 1st.

The renaming of the airport still needs FAA approval, which, if it is received as expected, would make the name change official as of July 1st. Known to travelers as “PBI,” the hub would then be referred to as “DJT.”
As you’d expect, liberals are aghast:
"It's misguided and unfair that the Republican-controlled Florida Legislature ignored the voices of Palm Beach County by pushing forward a bill to rename Palm Beach International Airport without giving County residents a real opportunity for input," said Rep. Lois Frankel, a Democrat who represents West Palm Beach.
The taxpayer-funded renaming of Palm Beach International to “President Donald J. Trump Airport” is an unprecedented grift.

The liberals were already fuming over the addition of Trump’s name to the Kennedy Center, as well as the highways and roads in multiple states named after him. This will doubtless send them into the rage stratosphere.
However, as unlikely as it might seem, I have a small bit of compassion for them. You see, out here in California, a portion of State Route 134 — the Ventura Freeway — was renamed the “President Barack H. Obama Highway” in 2017, and every time I have to get on it, I cringe.

Democrats were quick to allege that the president would try to profit off the Palm Beach facility, considering he has trademarked his name, but representatives shot that down:
A spokesperson for the Trump Organization said in February that Trump and his family would not receive royalties or licensing fees from the renaming of the Palm Beach airport, and the House bill’s text specifies that the branding would come at no cost.
“To be clear, the President and his family will not receive any royalty, licensing fee, or financial consideration whatsoever from the proposed airport renaming,” said Kimberly Benza, Trump Organization director of executive operations.
My hope is that one day I can travel to Palm Beach with a liberal and watch them break out in a cold sweat as they traverse the concourse.
