“Stop Making Sense” is a 1984 film by the band Talking Heads, but it’s a phrase that often comes to mind when Sen. John Fetterman opens his mouth. No, he’s not suddenly on the conservative team and he’s going to continue to vote with the progressive wing on a host of issues, but he’s not the Pennsylvania version of AOC that I expected when he beat Mehmet Oz for the seat.
There’s one subject where he’s been particularly strong and has most parted ways with his liberal colleagues: Israel. You can be sure they won’t like his latest pronouncement: he fully endorses bombing the heck out of Iran’s nuclear weapons program.
Warning: profanity. If a Democrat is speaking these days, they’re likely to be swearing:
"Waste that s—t," the Pennsylvania Democrat told the Washington Free Beacon in an interview on Wednesday. "You're never going to be able to negotiate with that kind of regime that has been destabilizing the region for decades already, and now we have an incredible window, I believe, to do that, to strike and destroy Iran's nuclear facilities."
He’s made his feelings known previously on Israel, Hamas, and Iran:
The only purpose of Iran’s nuclear program is to create weapons.

We can’t allow that or negotiate with this regime.

The Pennsylvania Democrat had more:
Fetterman dismissed the foreign policy experts who warn that striking Iran would lead to the outbreak of a regional war. "And remember, all of these so-called experts were all wrong," he said. "You know, they've been saying for years and years Hezbollah was the ultimate badass that kept Israel in check, and we can't move on anything beyond that."
As it turned out, Fetterman said, the Iranian proxy group "couldn't fight for s—t. And Hamas, literally, are just a bunch of tunnel rats with junkie rockets in the back of a Toyota truck. And now the Houthis have been effectively neutered as well. So what's left? You have Iran, and they have a nuclear facility, and it's clearly only for weapons."

Maximum Pressure From Trump Admin Has Iran's Currency Hitting Near-Record Lows
Although the Trump administration has been in on-again, off-again negotiations with the Islamic Republic, so far no breakthroughs have emerged. Fetterman suggests a different negotiating tactic:
"Years ago, I completely understood why Trump withdrew from the Obama deal. Today, I can't understand why Trump would negotiate with this diseased regime. The negotiations should be comprised of 30,000-pound bombs and the IDF," Fetterman said.
Even after two years in office, it’s hard to know what to make of Fetterman—he’s still a die-hard leftist, yet he’s as hard-core right as they come on Israel and Iran. While he might not be the person we’d prefer to be occupying that seat, he’s at least a massive upgrade over congresscritters like Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Reps. AOC (D-NY) and Jasmine Crockett (D-TX).
Whether we should bomb Iran or not is still an open question—but one thing is clear: allowing them to get nuclear weapons would be very dangerous indeed.
