If you’re a regular here at RedState, you likely know that ABC News settled in Donald Trump’s defamation suit regarding incorrect allegations by anchor George Stephanopoulos to the tune of $15 million. Ouch.
You wouldn’t know it, however, if you depended on getting your news from George's show, "This Week," because he failed to mention the story on Sunday even once. In a brave, bold move (not) he also deleted his X account. Fox News is reporting that he did that over the weekend, but others claim he deactivated it in November. Either way, he must not have been getting very flattering messages.
ABC News host George Stephanopoulos ignored the news about his network’s massive settlement with President-elect Donald Trump on his Sunday show.
Fox News Digital first reported on Saturday that ABC News and Stephanopoulos agreed to a settlement to avoid a costly trial over Trump’s defamation lawsuit against the network and anchor.
News of the settlement, however, failed to appear on ABC’s "This Week." Instead, Stephanopoulos focused on stories about unidentified drones over New Jersey, ongoing conflicts in Syria and Trump’s cabinet picks.
It’s a pretty lame response from someone who just got thoroughly embarrassed on the national stage.
RedState’s Bonchie reported on the settlement on Saturday:
Donald Trump has won again. ABC News and George Stephanopoulos have settled the defamation lawsuit brought by the incoming president, with the news network agreeing to pay $15 million in damages while also issuing an apology.
The lawsuit was first filed after Stephanopoulos claimed as a matter of fact that Trump had “raped” E. Jean Carroll. The comment came during an interview with Rep. Nancy Mace...
...The apology issued as part of the settlement was tepid, but an apology nonetheless.
"ABC News and George Stephanopoulos regret statements regarding President Donald J. Trump made during an interview by George Stephanopoulos with Rep. Nancy Mace on ABC’s This Week on March 10, 2024," the statement reads.

George has long been a partisan and certainly not a “journalist”:
George Stephanopoulos is such a fraud.
— MAZE (@mazemoore) December 15, 2024
Fun fact, in 2015, while the presidential race was gearing up, he was forced to apologize on air for not disclosing that he had been donating to the Clinton Foundation. He was removed as a moderator for the debates. pic.twitter.com/GiGX2hmeft
Naturally, X users had plenty of thoughts about George's sudden case of shyness:
- @JusticeForAll: “Stephanopoulos disappearing after Trump’s win? Suspicious timing. What’s he avoiding?”
- @TrumpTrain2024: “Another left-wing media figure running away after getting proven wrong. Classic!”
- @FreedomWatchUSA: “Stephanopoulos’ silence speaks volumes. Where’s the accountability from the media?”
In fairness, the network may have prevented him from talking about the fiasco for “legal reasons.” Again, what bravery. If that was the case, why couldn't he simply acknowledge that he was in the news cycle but couldn’t address it? But to pretend none of it ever happened shows their utter inability to bring viewers the truth.
If he didn’t previously seem like a DNC mouthpiece, he—and ABC News—certainly do now.
