San Antonio police responded to a domestic violence call early Sunday morning but were met with gunfire from an assailant armed with a rifle. One officer was hit multiple times but is expected to survive. Police Chief William McManus described what transpired:

“When officers went into the apartment, he was lying in bed with a rifle by his side and he started shooting at the officers,” McManus said. “The officers returned fire and exited the apartment. One of our officers was shot multiple times, and she is currently in the hospital.”

Now Fox News' Bill Melugin is now reporting the suspect is a Venezuelan illegal immigrant who had been let free after being caught by Border Patrol:

Per sources, San Antonio PD officers were responding to a domestic violence call just after 3am. When they made entry, 25-year-old Jorge Chacon-Gutierrez was laying in bed with a rifle, and opened fire on officers. The officers returned fire, then retreated. Chacon-Gutierrez is now dead, unclear if from return fire or suicide. 
Per sources, the SAPD officer was shot multiple times, had surgery this morning, and she is expected to survive.
