New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is standing by another one of his socialist comrades, and he wants you to know she has "evolved."
That's his explanation for continuing to back Democratic Socialist congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier even after a mountain of deleted social media posts resurfaced showing her calling the United States "a f***ing disgrace," accusing veterans of committing "war crimes," and demanding the abolition of borders, police, and prisons. Mamdani claims he never saw any of it before endorsing her. Sure.
Avila Chevalier, 32, is running to unseat five-term Democrat Rep. Adriano Espaillat in New York's 13th Congressional District, which covers Upper Manhattan and parts of the Bronx. Mamdani threw his support behind her in late May, setting off a firestorm when the deleted posts were unearthed.
The hits kept coming. Among the resurfaced posts: calling former President Joe Biden a "rapist" and "war criminal," writing "F**k Kamala Harris," blaming the United States for provoking Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and sharing a post that read "Israel suddenly disappears, your third emoji is your reaction" — to which she replied, "Trick question — Israel doesn't exist!" She also peddled a fringe COVID-19 theory claiming the virus originated in France, citing a Chinese Communist Party propaganda outlet as her source.

Mamdani’s ‘Balanced Budget’ Is an Accounting Atrocity
During the pandemic, Avila Chevalier demanded that the government provide $3,000 per month in universal basic income, nationalize utilities, pharmaceutical companies, and hospitals, seize private property from landlords, dissolve insurance companies, and expand Medicare to every citizen.
Her campaign website, as recently as February, pledged that she would "vote against sending weapons or bombs to any country," a sweeping commitment that would have gutted U.S. military aid to NATO allies and Ukraine alike. That language has since been scrubbed. A campaign spokesperson claimed the edits were just for clarity.
None of it moved Mamdani.
"When it comes to Darializa's campaign for Congress, no, I had not seen those tweets," he told reporters Wednesday, declining to dispute their authenticity. "What I've heard from her, and what I know a lot of others in the district have heard from her, is that her views have evolved, and that the campaign that she's running on is reflective of what she's going to be fighting for."
He went further, praising her record of "freeing New Yorkers who are unjustly detained by ICE" and calling her "an incredible champion for that district and for the city as a whole."
Nobody who's paying attention believes that. Avila Chevalier is a fellow Democratic Socialists of America member who volunteered on Mamdani's own mayoral campaign. She is not an unknown quantity to him. And yet the mayor of the largest city in the country apparently endorsed her for Congress without doing even basic opposition research, or so he says.
Her campaign's enthusiasm for the controversy has been equally revealing. An 18-year-old volunteer social media coordinator for the campaign reacted to the avalanche of negative coverage by posting that the stories were making Avila Chevalier "sound cooler and cooler.”
That tells you everything you need to know about what this campaign actually believes and what Mamdani is knowingly standing behind.

Avila Chevalier's chief credential in the race is organizing the anti-Israel protests at Columbia University, the ones that featured assaults on Jewish students, swastikas, and were so out of control that the university had to close its campus and call in the NYPD. Columbia's president resigned over it.
Espaillat, 71, has represented the district since 2017 and is backed by AIPAC, a fact Avila Chevalier has made a centerpiece of her campaign. Mamdani's decision to knife him is particularly notable given that Espaillat backed him during last year's mayoral general election. In return, Mamdani endorsed a DSA insurgent over him.
New York's primary is June 23. Mamdani has made his choice, and he's sticking with it, deleted posts, scrubbed websites, and all.
