New York College Schools Students on the 'Ethical' Art of Non-Monogamous Sex

If you consider single-mate lovin' a no-go, you may require an education in non-monogamy. It's the latest sexual approach -- or the oldest. Either way, Ithaca College recently assisted those whose mouths water for the entree of a relationship with the side dish of others' unmentionables. After attending a scruples-based seminar, students were presumably primed to spread themselves thinly but thoughtfully.

On April 17th, the New York school posted to Instagram as follows:

Ethical Non-Monogamy

Join LGBTQ Center Director Crissi for a workshop that will cover the basics: what makes it ethical, how to communicate about it, how to find other non-monogamous folks, and more.

Exceptionally sex-friendly fellas and felines frequently need out of a jam:

Even in the queer community, there is often a default assumption that relationships will be monogamous... That works for a lot of people, but what if [it's] not your jam? Welcome to the wide world of ethical non-monogamy!

Concerning the lecture's locale, Ithaca's LGBTQ Center was founded in 1999 on three ideas: the value of "sexual and gender diversity," the right to services that embrace such, and the pursuit of social justice. The Center appears to be co-run by someone named Lee -- a multiracial "non-binary trans educator." At Cornell University, "they/them" studied "queer pop music and trans vocal practices."

As for Director (and non-monogamy mentor) Crissi, she's a regular "she/her" -- with some added extras:

As a queer polyamorous neurodivergent woman, [Crissi] is excited to share her joy and love for living out loud and hopes to inspire others to embrace their identities unapologetically.

Ostensibly, Crissi's neurodivergence and queerness lent a spicy spin to polysexual instruction.

And speaking of apologies: If you seek sophisticated sex, there's no need to say you're sorry. That's the message at Ithaca, but it isn't limited to the college or LGBT crowd. Not long ago, Psychology Today proved the virtue of variety via science:

Is Ethical Non-Monogamy Right For You?

New research shows that it depends on your motivation.

In a recent nationally representative survey, 32 percent of American adults said that their ideal relationship style is consensual non-monogamy.

Forget the fairy tale:

We live in a culture that perpetuates the idea that life-long monogamy is meant for everyone. The fairytale goes that we meet someone, fall in love, and live blissfully, happy forever after.

For some, monogamy does provide happiness and fulfillment and the chance to build a life and maybe a family with someone. Yet for others, it feels impossible and limiting.

Among the subtypes of sackin' it with several:

  • “Monogamish,” a term coined by Dan Savage which involves being mostly monogamous but occasionally partaking in outside romantic or sexual relationships.
  • Open relationships or swinging, where two partners allow each other to pursue outside sexual and/or romantic relationships more continuously.
  • Polyamory, which literally means having multiple loving relationships. Often this includes a group of people who are all in a relationship together.

Those come across as complicated; but alternative amore is undeniably all the rage. Just ask a heap of headlines:

Back to Ithaca, the sex symposium wasn't the first of its kind. According to a school webpage, last October saw "Ethical Non-Monogamy 101 (Leading in a Diverse World)" held at the campus's Clark Lounge. Such offerings raise a kettle of questions: Do students need a lecture on how to navigate dropping one's drawers like a libertine? Within the context of actual relationships, is such an agreed-upon system workable for young men and women alike? Is guiding guys' and gals' genital juggling within the collegiate purview?

As for that last one, it wasn't long ago that schools centered on academic enrichment. These days, the university system seems more so a place of identity dissection and sexual-sophisticate celebration. Combined with a host of other changes in the arena of higher learning, what will be the result? Whatever it is, we'll soon find out. Get ready for an unprecedentedly neurodivergent, non-monogamous, "diverse" America.
