Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian, speaking to the General Assembly of the Islamic Association of the Medical Society of Iran, has called for an end to the ongoing conflict between Iran and the United States. He's claiming that Iran is in a "position of strength." That kind of dissembling is par for the course in Iran, but we might note that this is something new; calling for a peace deal when addressing a purely Iranian group. This isn't posturing aimed at the United States and Israel; this happened in a speech to an Iranian audience.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian says it is time to end the months-long Middle East war with the United States and Israel because Tehran is in a position of strength over Washington.
“It is better that we bring the war to an end now, as we are in a position of power and dignity, and the whole world acknowledges our victory and emphasizes that America has attacked our schools, hospitals and infrastructure in violation of all regulations and is hated around the world,” he says in a meeting with doctors.
The United States has not attacked schools and hospitals. That kind of dissembling is also not anything new for any of Iran's civil or military leadership. But this call for a deal may well be a tacit admission that Iran is, in fact, not in a position of power, and should American attacks resume, they will be in even less of such a position.
A Fox News report also notes that Pezeshkian, in this same address, took a not-so-subtle poke at people in and outside of the Iranian government who want to keep up the fight.
Pezeshkian appeared to take a subtle jab at hardliners in his own country, criticizing people "sitting outside the circle."
"In the meantime, some people are sitting outside the circle; because they do not know the state of the government, the state of the parliament, and the state of the commanders, they make comments and analysis, even though they have not experienced any suffering or hardship, and then they talk about the cost. They do not find a single clause in this agreement that indicates a commitment; all commitments are related to the other party," he said.
The people "sitting outside the circle" may also not understand the economic sanctions that are hammering Iran right now, in the form of the American Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's Operation Economic Fury, which may well kick the feet out from under what's left of Iran's domestic economy.
President Pezeshkian's remarks here are interesting, but the problem with any deal he proposes that keeps the regime in place will, as the saying goes, just kick the can down the road. Iran under the mullahs, as long as it remains the Islamic Republic of Iran, will not stop finding ways to spread discord around the area. They will not stop supporting Islamic terror groups in the Middle East and elsewhere. And, they will not stop trying to build a nuclear weapon.
That's the problem that both the Trump administration and Iran's people face.
As of this writing, oil prices were heading up, with U.S. crude at 86.72 and Brent (UK) crude at 93.93. That's a concern for the Trump administration heading into the midterms. And the traditional post-Labor Day campaign season is only days away, and that's when this will start to become a real problem. As the old saying goes, it's the economy, stupid, and high energy prices hit everyone right smack in the wallet.
Stay tuned.
