Massive US-Mexico Border Tunnel Discovered Hidden in Plain Sight

Well, this is disconcerting. On Saturday, law enforcement on both sides of the border discovered and investigated what appears to be a smuggling tunnel, leading from the Mexican border city of Tijuana, possibly into the United States. The extent of the tunnel is still being investigated.

Cops on both sides of the US-Mexico border are investigating a sprawling underground passage uncovered in the Tijuana area that is believed to extend toward the US.

The tunnel was found Saturday in the Nueva Tijuana neighborhood during a raid carried out by Mexican federal authorities, with support from the Mexican Navy, according to Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office.

Investigators said the hidden passage stretches roughly 869 feet and sits about 21 feet below ground, making it one of the more substantial cross-border tunnel discoveries in recent years.

That's a serious job of work, that went into this, and not the back-slapping "well done" sort. This may well be a serious smuggling effort, an attempt to bring into the United States everything from drugs to possibly trafficked people. The evidence seized would appear to indicate just that:

During the operation, officers seized a variety of items, including ammunition, cellphones, bank cards, a digital video recorder and dozens of doses of methamphetamine.

While inspecting the site, investigators located a wooden-lined tunnel that officials believe was constructed to reach the US border.

Mexican authorities said evidence recovered during the raid suggests the property may have been used as a logistical center for criminal activity, including the storage and movement of narcotics, weapons and explosive materials.

The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is now involved in the investigation, according to a statement released to a local news outlet. As of this writing, there hasn't been an official statement on the DHS website or X account.

A Homeland Security Investigations spokesperson shared the following statement with NBC 7: "Special Agents with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in San Diego, in coordination with our Homeland Security Task Force (HSTF) partners, are conducting a criminal enforcement operation involving a cross-border subterranean tunnel in Otay Mesa, CA. To protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation and ensure the safety of all involved, we are unable provide (sic) additional details at this time.”

It's the possible explosives angle that's really troubling. This would seem to be well beyond the run-of-the-mill narco-smuggling operation, or a passageway for illegal aliens to enter the USA. This could be a very serious matter indeed, with weapons and destructive devices entering the country. The Mexican cartels are known to possess and use military-grade hardware, including grenades, mortars, and rocket launchers. Could some of that material be moving north? Even after the Trump administration's clampdown on the border, some material still gets through. It's a big border; much of it runs through remote country, and it's difficult to control every mile, especially against organized cartels that are willing to go to extremes like this tunnel.

The takeaway here? America's border problem will never be completely resolved. It will require constant vigilance, constant policing, and rigorous control. Always. That's the lesson of this tunnel, and that, even more so, is the lesson of the disastrous border policies of the late, unlamented Biden administration.

Editor’s Note: Thanks to President Trump, illegal immigration into our great country has virtually stopped. Despite the radical left's lies, new legislation wasn't needed to secure our border, just a new president.
