Trump Drops Unexpected Hezbollah Update Amid Iran Tensions

On this Monday, things between Washington and the Middle East are sure happening- one might say, fast and furious. In the latest, and perhaps most unexpected development, President Trump took to his Truth Social account to report on productive calls he has had with Israel, and... Hezbollah?

Yes, really.

The president writes:

I had a very productive call with Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu, of Israel, and there will be no Troops going to Beirut, and any Troops that are on their way, have already been turned back. Likewise, through highly placed Representatives, I had a very good call with Hezbollah, and they agreed that all shooting will stop — That Israel will not attack them, and they will not attack Israel. President DONALD J. TRUMP

With Hezbollah. Well, that's unexpected.

My colleague Nick Arama has been doing some great work this morning, taking this nest of snakes that is the current state of affairs in Iran and laying them all out straight:

Iran Throws Wrench Into Talks, Pulling Yet Another Hypocritical Move

But this latest move is a bit of an eye-opener.

As Nick reported, Iran had earlier said that they were cutting off communications and tossing any deals, in part because of Israel's renewed attacks on Hezbollah assets in Lebanon. Hezbollah is, of course, an Iranian proxy group. Now, President Trump appears to have brokered a deal between Israel and Hezbollah to halt the attacks, for now at least.

Will this bring Iran back to the table? More to the point, since when has Hezbollah ever kept its word on anything?

There are an awful lot of balls in the air right now, and the whole thing has become dizzying. Only moments after President Trump posted the above message, he posted another, claiming that Iran is returning to the table.

The president writes:

Talks are continuing, at a rapid pace, with the Islamic Republic of Iran. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP

Dizzying, indeed.

Here's the operating assumption that should be held firmly at the top of one's mind when dealing with Iran and Hezbollah: President Trump must understand that neither Iran nor Hezbollah has any intention of abiding by any deal they make. Oh, they will make a show of it in the short term. Hezbollah will stop their attacks, almost certainly using the time to recruit, train, and re-arm. Iran will agree to a deal, but they may well find a way to resume support for groups like Hezbollah, while hiding away enough of their nuclear research to keep the effort going. They may agree to a deal, but if the 47-year history of the Islamic Republic has taught us anything, it is that they will lie. They will lie in our faces; they will lie when there's nothing to be gained from lying; they will lie when the truth is the only thing that might save them.

That must be at the center of any considerations America makes. The only thing we can trust when dealing with these people is that we can't trust them.

Meanwhile, the game continues, and we are reminded that too often, this kind of diplomacy consists of saying "Nice doggie, nice doggie" until one can find a rock.

Editor's Note: For decades, former presidents have been all talk and no action. Now, Donald Trump is eliminating the threat from Iran once and for all.
