You can always count on the left to be vocal champions of free speech. Until, that is, someone disagrees with them. Then, that person's speech suddenly becomes "hate speech" or "misinformation," and the speaker requires silencing - or re-education. In the latest such incident of free speech suppression, the New York Police Department (NYPD) has transferred an experienced NYPD captain into what sure looks like a punishment posting after he spoke out against the Big Apple's "democratic socialist" Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

An exclusive piece at the New York Post has details.
An NYPD captain who was transferred to a less desirable role after being caught on video bashing NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani as “an embarrassment” has become a veritable folk hero with an army of supporters backing him for speaking his mind about the radical socialist.
Republican pols and other high-ranking conservatives are now taking up Capt. James G. Wilson’s cause, and defending his Constitutional rights.
They say the department’s decision to ship Wilson from the 94th Precinct in Brooklyn – where he served as the second-highest officer for the Greenpoint station house – to the NYPD’s 911 call center in The Bronx is the latest example of City Hall having two sets of rules: one for far-left comrades and another for everyone else.
Now, I will say this: Captain Wilson may have shown poor judgment in making this statement while in uniform and apparently on duty. But a matter of judgment does not strip away anyone's First Amendment rights. And now some voices of reason on the City Council are coming to Captain Wilson's defense.
“If Capt. Wilson had said something negative about Donald Trump, he’d probably be declared a hero and get a medal and a dinner at Gracie Mansion,” said Councilwoman Joann Ariola (R-Queens).
“But since he spoke out against Dear Leader Mamdani, the manufactured outrage machine is kicking into gear, and the radicals are coming out of the woodwork to silence all public dissent. This is what they do, but more and more New Yorkers are starting to see through the censorship and realize what’s really going on.”
This is how the Swamp works, and yes, there is the big Swamp in Washington, D.C., and there are smaller swamps at the state and municipal level, across the land; that's how the left works, by wrapping its tentacles into every aspect of the bureaucracy and maintaining an iron grip. Politicians come, and politicians go, but these swamps are a lot harder to clear away - and they don't like dissenters.

Amazingly, there are some Republicans in the City Council pointing out the hypocrisy.
Council Minority Leader David Carr (R-Staten Island) agreed, saying, “We have heard city employees make disparaging remarks about our president, sometimes about Republicans or conservatives and even entire groups of New Yorkers, with absolutely no consequence.”
“Even if a policy prohibiting political speech by public employees is Constitutional, it sure as hell isn’t enforced fairly or consistently,” he said.
It was never intended to be enforced consistently. That's not how the left operates. The right tends to see policies like these as rules to be applied across the board, evenly, with everyone treated equally under the law. The left tends to see policies like these as tools, even weapons, to be wielded against political opponents and ignored when they would apply to political allies.
Principals, not principles. That's always how it is with the left.
