Only recently, former President Barack Obama - perhaps in a desperate bid to regain something resembling relevance - let slip a claim that the American government has had some truck with aliens. Either they have aliens, have seen aliens, or know of aliens - that part isn't clear. Later, the former president tried to walk back his comments, but that's not a horse that's easily put back in the stable.
Now, on Thursday, President Donald Trump made a comment that may have... confirmed what President Obama said? Maybe?
President Trump alleged Thursday that former President Barack Obama revealed “classified information” — a potential crime — when he said that aliens are “real” in a recent interview.
“He gave classified information, he’s not supposed to be doing that,” Trump told reporters on Air Force One.
“I don’t know if they’re real or not, but I can tell you he gave classified information.”
“He made a big mistake,” Trump went on. “He took it out of classified information. No, I don’t have an opinion on it. I never talk about it. A lot of people do. A lot of people believe it.”
Obama told podcaster Brian Tyler Cohen, who asked about aliens, that “they’re real, but I haven’t seen them.”
Well, that's not really an admission on President Trump's part, but it's not a denial, either.
Here's what makes me skeptical about all this "aliens" nonsense: If the United States (or any government) has some indications of extraterrestrial, intelligent beings, be it a live specimen, a corpse, unedited video footage, whatever - it would be the biggest secret ever kept by humankind. It would be bigger than claims of the moon landings being faked (they weren't). And you just simply can't keep things like this a secret. Knowing, unequivocally, that we are not alone in the universe, that there are other intelligent beings out there with technology that allows interstellar travel, well, that would be the most gob-smacking, earth-shaking sockdologer of a revelation in history. It would change everything.
There would have to be hundreds, likely thousands, of people in on this, just to do the analysis and evaluation that an actual extraterrestrial encounter would demand. There's no way in blazes that not one person involved has come forward to gain unending fame and fortune by blowing the deal.
Unless the aliens themselves are somehow controlling all these people - but that idea is way out in cloud-cuckoo land.

I'm not saying that there are no extraterrestrial intelligences out there, and I say that not just because I'm a science-fiction writer in my spare time. I say that because this universe is so vast, with billions of galaxies, trillions of stars, and an unimaginable number of planets, that the mere laws of chance make it difficult to believe that there are not, or have not been, other thinking creatures, somewhere in all that. But the odds of our having contact with any of them are so low as to be essentially zero, due to the time spans and distances involved.
An Obama spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
You don't say.
I could be wrong. Maybe the United States is holding aliens, alive or dead. All we can hope for is that the rest of the aliens don't come looking for their lost comrades. In that event, there's still hope: if aliens do attack, we have indications that they can be foiled with Slim Whitman music.
