Now There's Another Democrat Opposing the Schumer Shutdown? Who Saw That Coming?

There are some Democrats, it seems, who are not consumed with Trump Derangement Syndrome. Or, at least, they are not so knee-jerkingly opposed to all things Trump to not understand that sometimes you have to take the deal that's on the table, especially when you're in the minority, instead of throwing a hissy-fit and shutting down the government because your party leadership is full of Schiff.

One of these rare Democrats would seem to be (for the moment, anyway) Representative Jared Golden (D-ME), who has criticized the far-left wing of his own party over the shutdown.

That's remarkable.

Democratic Rep. Jared Golden  (Maine) criticized “far-left groups” for demanding Democrats vote against a Republican-backed proposal to fund the government.

“This government shutdown is the result of hardball politics driven by the demands far-left groups are making for Democratic Party leaders to put on a show of their opposition to President Trump,” Golden said in a Wednesday statement

Golden was the lone Democrat to vote for the GOP funding bill, which passed the House 217-212 on Sept. 19.

In a statement the day of the vote, Golden’s office pointed to the impacts a shutdown would have on the more than 12,000 federal workers in Maine and argued a closure would give the president “extraordinary leeway in determining which aspects of government are ‘essential,’ and which can be shuttered.”

Now, Jared Golden may be of a sound mind on this shutdown, but that doesn't make him a conservative, or even whatever passes for a moderate in the Democratic Party these days. He's normally a reliable Democrat vote in the House. But on this issue? He's on the money. There's a time and a place for any political party to dig in its heels and fight, but for Democrats, now, on this issue, this isn't it. It's to Rep. Diamond's credit that he gets that much.

The Republican funding bill, dubbed “clean” and “nonpartisan” by House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), would have funded the government through Nov. 21. It was voted down Tuesday in the Senate, though, with just three members of the Senate Democratic caucus — John Fetterman (Pa.), Catherine Cortez Masto (Nev.) and Angus King (Maine), an independent who caucuses with the Democrats — voting in favor. Republican Sen. Rand Paul (Ky.) voted against the proposal.

On Wednesday, Senate Democrats blocked a motion to advance the GOP funding bill once again.

Remember when there were more than a few moderate Democrats, ones we could count on to admit that they didn't win a battle but went ahead and did what was best for the country? It's good to see there are at least a few Democrats like that still around.

Here, Rep. Golden makes a good point:

Golden said Tuesday that while Republicans have “reasonable concerns about tax credits going to high-income households,” a negotiation, not a shutdown, is the best path forward.

“There’s room and time to negotiate,” he added. “But normal policy disagreements are no reason to subject our constituents to the continued harm of this shutdown.”

Credit where credit is due. The CR offered was a clean one, no changes, no big ideas, just buying time to talk. Democrats didn't want to talk. This shutdown is a Democrat shutdown. They did it. They own it. At least a few of their own members, including not only Rep. Golden but also Senators John Fetterman (D-PA), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), and Angus King (D-ME), voted against closing the government's doors. But they are going to have to convince a few of their colleagues to join the Republicans on this, unless they want this hung around their neck as we go into the mid-term election cycle.

Let's hope they don't work that part out too soon.

Editor’s Note: The Schumer Shutdown is here. Rather than put the American people first, Chuck Schumer and the radical Democrats forced a government shutdown for healthcare for illegals. They own this.
