Big: JD Vance Talks Trump, Teases 2028 Presidential Run

Over the weekend, Vice President JD Vance spoke with Fox News commentator Lara Trump on her weekend program "My View With Lara Trump." It was (as you might guess) a friendly venue for the vice president, not that he shies away from unfriendly ones. In this interview, the vice president spoke of his boss and what it was like working with the president, who apparently almost never sleeps. But he also spoke about something else, something that plenty of people are wondering about: The 2028 presidential election.

Vice President JD Vance stopped short of confirming a 2028 White House run during an appearance on "My View" with Lara Trump Saturday night, but he acknowledged the possibility—noting if he does his job well, "the politics will figure itself out."

Vance, whose resilience amid an upbringing marked with family turmoil and economic hardship won over the nation, said he "doesn't like thinking about" a potential presidential bid and insisted his attention remains on his current role.

"If we do a good job in 2025 and 2026, then we can talk about the politics in 2027," Vance said. "I really think the American people are so fed up with folks who are already running for the next job, seven months into the current one."

Like his boss, JD Vance is a rather unconventional politician. Unlike his boss, Vice President Vance doesn't take the battering-ram approach that President Trump often takes in discussing anything from crime to foreign affairs to other politicians and upcoming elections. But a quick look at his statement, translated from political-speak into English, sure reads like the vice president is leaving the door open to a 2028 run. And it's a big, beautiful door.

Here's the key statement:

"There are a lot of great people," Vance said. "If I do end up running, it's not going to be given to me—either on the Republican side or on the national side. I'm just going to keep on working hard.… [This] may be the most important job I ever had, outside of being a father to those three beautiful kids. So I'm going to try to do my best job, and I think if I do that, the politics will figure itself out."

That's the critical notion. In such instances, the vice president is usually the presumptive front-runner, but there will likely be primary challengers. There's one guy in particular, a former 2024 Trump primary opponent turned ally, who may want to make another run, and that's Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Oh, and there will likely be some soft-shelled invertebrate establishment types from the ranks of The Bulwark that may take a run, but I think we can safely dismiss them.

In 2028 or 2032, JD Vance would probably be a pretty good president. So would Ron DeSantis, for that matter. The GOP presidential field is pretty much an embarrassment of riches at the moment.

The Democrats, though? Who have they got? California's Governor, Gavin "A Little Dab'll Do Ya" Newsom, who oversaw the ruin of San Francisco before going on to oversee the ruin of California? Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, who blames Chicago's runaway crime rate on Indiana? AOC, who might lose a battle of wits with a grapefruit?

Elections are tricky things, and much depends, especially in midterms, on which side is the most angry and upset. Right now, that's Democrats. In 2024, it was Republicans. That may be a big decider in the 2026 midterms, which just makes it all the more important for the GOP voters to stay motivated and vote; but in a presidential election?

Unless the Democrats can shed themselves of progressive nitwittery and select one of their few remaining moderates - if any are left - they've got a big, steep hill to climb in 2028. Vice President Vance surely knows this. That's why he's leaving that big, beautiful door open.
