Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons is not happy about the sanctuary policies of the Arlington County, Virginia, Sheriff's office, and he's vocal about it. The imbroglio began with the arrest of one David Cabrera, an illegal alien who pled guilty to attempted rape in 2024.
Thanks to Arlington County's policy of not cooperating with ICE, the federal agents had to hunt up Cabrera after he was released from the courthouse, instead of just having him handed over.
David Cabrera, an undocumented immigrant who pleaded guilty to the attempted rape of Arlington teenager in 2014, was detained by ICE agents outside the Arlington County magistrate’s office earlier this month.
ICE had previously deported Cabrera two times since 2017, court records show.
In an interview with Fox News, Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons said that his agency had an active detainer out for Cabrera when he was arrested for an alleged probation violation last month. This is a non-binding request asking an agency to help ICE in detaining an individual.
First off, Cabrera's not an "undocumented immigrant." Whomever applied that term to him is full of Schiff. He's an illegal alien. He's also a danger to the community, and has entered the United States illegally at least three times.
Here's the onion:
Cabrera’s immigration arrest earned the opposite response from Commonwealth’s Attorney Parisa Dehghani-Tafti, who reiterated criticisms of efforts to have ICE target more people accused, but not convicted, of crimes.
Dehghani-Tafti has argued that such changes hinder public safety by creating greater distrust between immigrant communities and law enforcement.
“People who were walking out of the magistrate’s office after being CHARGED — not convicted, just charged, when the presumption of innocence is attached — were being greeted by ICE,” she wrote in a social media post.
Did she miss the part where Cabrera was in the country illegally? Or the part where he pled guilty to attempted rape? Either way, this guy shouldn't be in the United States. He's here in violation of immigration law. He's a known criminal and sex offender. He brings no value whatsoever to the country or the American people; he never will, and there simply is no place for him here.

In any case, none of these "sanctuary" jurisdictions is going to slow ICE down much, if at all. They can bluster and posture, but the federal government has authority over immigration law and policy, the Executive Branch has been given enforcement power by Congress, and ICE has been assigned to the task by the President of the United States under the auspices of the Border Czar, Tom "The Hammer" Homan.
So in the end, all these actions by Arlington County are just corral litter.
Lyons’ criticisms of the sheriff’s office aren’t the first time Arlington County has recently come under fire for policies protecting undocumented immigrants.
A recent County Board vote to end voluntary cooperation with ICE at the Arlington County Police Department led to sharp criticisms from top state officials — Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) and Attorney General Jason Miyares (R).
David Cabrera is still in custody, and will still be repatriated. And that's still what we voted for.
Editor’s Note: Democrat politicians and their radical supporters will do everything they can to interfere with and threaten ICE agents enforcing our immigration laws.
