There is a time and a place for arguing politics. Granted, arguing politics is a large part of what we do at RedState, and it's why most of you come here to read our work. But sometimes politics must be set aside in favor of our common humanity and simple decency. This is one of those times.
On Friday, former President Joe Biden was diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer. The cancer has metastasized to his bones:
Former President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, his personal office announced on Sunday.
"Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms," read a statement released by the president's personal office. "On Friday he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone."
"While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management," the statement continued. "The President and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians."
This comes, as RedState's own Susie Moore informed us last week about the discovery of "nodules" on Mr. Biden's prostate. The statement of Mr. Biden's diagnosis was also released on X.

Few among us lack an acquaintance with this horrible disease. My brother fought back colorectal cancer twice. Two of my best friends have suffered and won, one of them a cancer in the lymph nodes in his neck, the other with breast cancer - yes, men get it too.
And a few years ago, my siblings and I lost our sister to cancer, which began with breast cancer and spread like wildfire to become everything cancer.
The good news is that, over the last couple of decades, cancer survival rates in the United States have increased by a good margin, even though rates of cancer itself have risen:
According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the number of new cancer cases nationwide rose nearly 36.3% between 2000 and 2021. Meanwhile, the age-adjusted incidence rate per 100,000 people fell from 485.8 to 458.3, a 5.7% drop.
This trend is underscored by annual cancer deaths. While total cancer deaths grew by 10.6% between 2000 and 2021, the annual mortality rate fell from 198.8 to 144.2 per 100,000 people — a 27.5% decline.
The implications of Mr. Biden's diagnosis are not yet fully known, although, as noted, it is a form of cancer that normally responds well to treatment, so that's hopeful.
Whatever our political differences, and those are many, we wouldn't wish cancer on anyone, much less a former president now in retirement. Too many of us have seen the results. Too many of us have dealt with cancer personally. And too many of us have lost loved ones to it.
